Help make a difference in our community! Project Feed the Thousands is gearing up under the leadership of the National Honor Society for its annual kick-off assembly this Monday, November 18.  If you can, please bring an item --canned goods, dried good or personal items--to donate at that event. Each grade will have a collection bin into which you'll put your donation.   [Hint:   Think "Spirit Points"!]

DISASTER RELIEF APPEAL FOR THE PHILLIPINES
As many of you know last Friday, November 8th, one of the most powerful typhoons in history hit the Philippine Islands, devastating everything in its path. Many lives were lost and the death toll is climbing daily. Medical facilities, homes, businesses, and infrastructures were completely destroyed, and the survivors are desperate for basic needs of water, food, clothing, and medicines. Personally, my family is safe, but many of my friends and community members have lost everything. On behalf of my country people, I am asking for help in supporting their needs by raising funds. At the school we have organized a bottle drive, and we are asking the local community to join in the effort. An L & G Disaster Relief Fund account has been set up at D & K's Redemption Center in Jamaica, and at the Putney Road Redemption Center in Brattleboro. Please help us help the Filipino survivors by bringing your redeemable items to one of the redemption centers and donating the funds to the relief account. In addition to the bottle drive, donation checks can be made out to Leland and Gray Union High School with a memo noting the Disaster Relief Fund (PO Box 128 Townshend, Vermont 05353). I will make sure that the funds directly reach those in need. MARAMING SALAMAT PO! ("Thank you very much" in Tagalog).
 With great appreciation,
Rence Ricohermoso

A NOTE FROM THE SCHOOL NURSE
What should we do to prepare for this flu season?
CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccine for everyone 6 months of age and older as the first and most important step in protecting against this serious disease. While there are many different flu viruses, the flu vaccine is designed to protect against the three main flu strains that research indicates will cause the most illness during the flu season. Getting the flu vaccine as soon as it becomes available each year is always a good idea, and the protection you get from vaccination will last throughout the flu season.

In addition, you can take everyday preventive steps like staying away from sick people and washing your hands to reduce the spread of germs. If you are sick with flu, stay home from work or school to prevent spreading influenza to others.
