The Not On Tobacco (N.O.T) program is coming to Leland and Gray. This program was developed by the American Lung Association to help high school students quit tobacco use. It is a ten week long program, each week with its own goal and incentive. Each session is roughly 30 minutes long and will be facilitated by Jaclyn, a N.O.T. facilitator. This program is to help those who want to quit using tobacco do so.  Please only sign up if you are serious about quitting. The program starts February 10th.  Please sign up by the 6th of February.  For more information visit http://www.lung.org/associations/states/georgia/educational-programs/n-o-t-not-on-tobacco/not-on-tobacco.html or see Jaclyn.

A NOTE FROM THE SCHOOL NURSE
Cough and cold season is upon us
There is no cure for the common cold, but we can comfort ourselves and promote healing by drinking 8 to 10 glasses of water daily to help loosen phlegm and soothe irritation.  We can drink hot tea or hot water with honey and lemon juice. A small dash of cayenne (if you can take it) will help dry up phlegm. Apple cider vinegar with hot water and honey also soothes the throat. Some health food stores sell Fire Cider, a tasty combination of vinegar infused with powerful immune-boosting, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and decongestant herbs.
You can make your own Fire Cider with the following recipe from Rosemary Gladstar of Sage Mountain Retreat Center and Botanical Sanctuary.  Rosemary Gladstar is a pioneer in the herbal movement and has been called the 'godmother of American Herbalism'.
Fire Cider
Ingredients
·         1 part garlic, finely chopped
·         1 part horseradish, finely chopped
·         1 part onions, finely chopped
·         1/2 part fresh ginger, grated
·         Cayenne to taste (just a few grains will do)
·         Honey to taste
·         Apple cider vinegar
Directions
Chop enough of the first four ingredients to fill a quart jar approximately half full.  Pour enough apple cider vinegar in jar to be 2-3 inches above herbs.  Add cayenne to taste.  Let sit 2-3 weeks.  Strain herbs.*  Add honey to taste.
Fire Cider should taste hot, spicy, and sweet.  Fire Cider can be taken straight by the spoonful, added to veggie juice, splashed in fried rice, or drizzled on a salad with good olive oil.
*You can save the strained pulp and mix it with shredded veggies like carrots, cabbage, broccoli, and fresh herbs to make delicious and aromatic stir-fries and spring rolls!

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month.
Fact or Fiction   Sugar causes cavities.
It’s actually Fiction
This one is tricky, but it’s true. Sugar by itself does not cause cavities. It’s the acid produced by the cavity-causing bacteria that cause cavities. You can help prevent cavities by brushing twice a day and flossing daily and limiting between-meal snacks and visiting your dentist regularly.
Find more fun facts by taking the quiz at http://www.mouthhealthy.org/en/Teens/fact-or-fiction.

LELAND AND GRAY PLAYERS
Mark your calendars!  Leland and Gray Players present Hats Off!, the annual cavalcade of comedy, song and dance, March 6 and 7 at 7PM and March 8 at 7:30.  To players’ and all students: It's not too late to toss your hat in the ring, so to speak.  See Ms. Landenberger if you have a number in mind.
HUNGRY HEARTS FILM
The Hungry Heart: A Film about Prescription Drug Abuse in Vermont comes to Leland and Gray. The Hungry Heart provides an intimate look at the often hidden world of prescription drug addiction. We meet St. Albans pediatrician Fred Holmes, who works with patients struggling with this disease.

In addition to students and parents/guardians involved in co-curricular activities, this free event is open to all students, staff, and community members. Leland and Gray will feature the movie in the Dutton Gym on Wednesday, January 29th at 6:30pm (snow-date: February 5th). Before the film, a reception for all moviegoers will be provided beginning at 5:45pm, sponsored by the West River Valley Thrives Coalition.

Afterwards, filmmaker Bess O’Brien, Dr. Holmes, his patients, and family members will present and answer questions from the audience. Earlier that day, they will present at a school assembly and meet with doctors at Grace Cottage Hospital to discuss the problem of prescription drug abuse in our area. The film shines a light on the healing power of conversation and the need for connection that many young addicts yearn for, but do not have in their lives. Throughout the movie, we see the many faces and diverse populations of addiction, and their continued search for a life of recovery. Please attend this unique opportunity for our community to learn together.
