The team competed against Fair Haven, Manchester and Twin Valley. The competition was twelve rounds. At the end of the 6th round, we got out of last place. At the end of the 8th round, we had made it to 3rd place. The 12th round was exciting because, after spelling his last regular word correctly, Vinny got a bonus word and also spelled it correctly! This dramatic move bumped us up to second place. The final scores were Manchester 120, Leland and Gray 90, Fair Haven 88 and Twin Valley 86.
Mrs. VanPamelen, Newbrook teacher and long-time bee coach, says, “I was very proud of the students. I am hoping that next year we are able to get five students to really commit.” She also spoke about making the Spelling Bee Team an extracurricular at Leland and Gray next year. “Ms. V.P,” as she is fondly known, loves working with the students and appreciated Onaia’s support of the team.

Restorative Justice Training:
A two-day restorative justice training with Dan DeWalt will take place on Tuesday, December 9th from 2:45-4:15. The training is recommended for all Leland and Gray community members, staff, students, and parents. Mr. DeWalt has facilitated numerous restorative circles at Leland and Gray in the last five years and will travel to New York City this month to further his training by attending a course offered by the International Institute for Restorative Practices. 8th Grade Community Event:
On Wednesday, December 10th at 6:30 pm, there will be a Pasta dinner for eighth graders and their families provided by the award winning Junior Iron Chef after school program (gluten free option will be available) in the Activity Room. We will have fun activities that address the needs indicated on the survey from the last event. We're looking forward to seeing you there!Spelling Bee:
On November 1st, 2014, Jillian Carona, Vinny Ferrizzi and Zoie Brooks went to the Regional Spelling Competition in Manchester. Newbrook sixth grader Tiffany Cullum helped fill in as the required fourth member. The tenth grade class is putting on this year's high school semi formal dance. It will be on Saturday, December 13th at the Townshend Town Hall from 6:30-10pm. Ticket prices will be $5 in advance (there will be a table set up in the lunch room) and $7 at the door.
