SCHOOL INFO:

Schedule:

Just a reminder that there is no school on Monday due to Martin Luther King, Jr. day and there is no school on Tuesday due to Teachers In-Service Day.  Wednesday, January 21st is a Winter Activities Day.

Winter Activities:

Wednesday January 21 is our second winter activity day.  Dress and plan accordingly.

Note:  Stratton bus riders, your skis and snowboards will be delivered to the school on Thursday mid morning.  To keep them secure, we will bring them into the building.  Please make arrangement to take your skis and boards home.  In the past, the skis and boards followed the bus home.  This is no longer the case.  Our driver, Mr. Lucas Bates, and truck live in Wardsboro and coming to Townshend from Stratton at the end of they day is an unreasonable expectation.

7th Grade:

You can find a link to the 7th Grade Homework Chart on the Leland & Gray homepage. It is the first option under the "Teacher Web Pages" menu:https://sites.google.com/a/lelandandgray.org/7th-grade-class/

Please contact Johanna Liskowsky-Doak, Rence Ricohermoso, Amanda Dixon or Joe Towle with any questions!

From the Nurse:

T-Zone Awareness:  Do not put your fingers in your eyes, nose, or mouth.  The facial mucous membranes, the T-zone, are the ONLY portal for entry into the body for ALL respiratory infections.  T-zone awareness is the most critical step in preventing the perpetuation of viral disease, as it prevents the transmission of respiratory pathogens by self-inoculation with a contaminated hand or finger.  Self-inoculation occurs when a hand or finger is brought to the mucous membranes of the face (T-zone).  Touching the T-zone often occurs without thought, such as when we rub or scratch other parts of our face.

Contrary to popular belief, behaviors such as kissing, talking, coughing, or even drooling do not contribute substantially to the spread of disease.  Cold viruses have been shown to survive on indoor surfaces for more than 7 days.  They survive longer on non-porous surfaces, such as stainless steel and plastics, than on porous surfaces, such as fabrics and tissues.  Their ability to cause an infection starts to decrease after 24 hours.

Music Department:

On Monday, January 12th Susie Francy traveled to the Elley-Long Music Center in Colchester to attend rehearsals and a performance of her new piece, "Apollo's Medley." The composition was written for brass quintet and piano. It was played by professional musicians as part of a concert series which features the work of student composers called Opus 29. Susie took part in an online composing mentorship program made possible by a Vermont based organization called Music-COMP Twenty five students out of about 100 were chosen to have their work performed. In addition to that honor Susie will be featured "Student Composer of the Month" on VPR Classical in February. The segment will air four times in the first week of February and be available to listen to after that online.

All State Music Festival auditions are on Saturday, January 17th.

On Friday and Saturday, January 30th and 31st 11 Leland and Gray musicians will be participating in the Connecticut Valley Winter Music Festival. Fairen Stark and Veronica Stevens will be in the middle school concert band. Chloe Fawcett, Ashley Hescock, Anita Munafia, Susie Francy, Emma Urbaska, Adam Culver, Gregory Holland and Carl Judd-Wright will be singing in the high school chorus and Giannina Gaspero-Beckstrom will be playing in the high school jazz band. The concert will be at 3PM on Saturday in the Hartford High School Gymnasium.

Leland and Gray's a cappella group "The Rebel Clefs" will be part of a concert of high school groups at the Brattleboro Museum and Art Center at 7:30 PM on Friday, February 6th.
