8th Grade Parents:

8th grade homework assignments build on what has happened that day in class.  The lesson is taught and assignments are typically begun in class.  They need to be completed before the next class.  Without completed homework, students will not be as successful in the next day.  This design is intended to help 8th graders become more independent learners, a skill needed for high school.  Please check Power School daily to see what the day's homework assignment is, and ask to see your child's homework when it is completed.

School Handbook Update:

The following definition has been added to Student Handbook – Lookalike Containers and Products

On p. 54 of L&G’s 2015-16 Student Handbook is an explanation of the mandated Vermont State policy F07, Student Alcohol and Drugs. Much of this handbook section lists detailed consequences of students under the influence or who bring or distribute drugs, drug paraphernalia, or alcohol at school. Until now, a definition of these substances or related items has not been included. Beginning November 2, 2015 and until further notice, the definition will be included as follows:

DRUG: For the purposes of this policy, the word “drug” includes alcohol, non-alcoholic malt beverages, beverages with any amount of alcohol, narcotics, hallucinogenics, amphetamines, barbiturates, marijuana and all other controlled substances as defined by and federal statute or regulation. It also means any substance represented to be a “drug” as defined above, including “look alikes,” ergogenic and performance enhancing substances, and paraphernalia, including containers, specifically or reasonably associated with drug use.

From the Music Department:

On Friday, November 20th thirteen Leland and Gray music students will be traveling to Brattleboro Union High School to participate in the Connecticut Valley Music Festival Association's Fall Music Festival. Veronica Stevens, Alice Coyne, Caroline Mehner, Haileigh Travers and Kirsten Munson will be in the middle school chorus. Gregory Holland, Karson Petty, Fairen Stark and Felix Judd-Wright will be in the high school concert band and Sarah Andersen, Susie Francy, Emma Urbaska and Gabrel Vanni-Phillips will be in the jazz choir. The middle school group will be in a concert at 3 PM and the high school groups will have their concert at 5PM on Saturday, Nov. 21st. Both concerts are in the BUHS Auditorium.  The next Friends of Music meeting will be December 2nd at 5:30 in the music room.

Winter Activities:

It’s that time of year again and we welcome you to join us for all of your L&G Winter Activity equipment needs – rentals of skis, snowboards and boots.  We encourage you to come in before the Thanksgiving holiday so we can get your child(ren) outfitted for the season.  The season runs from 10/23/15- 4/30/16.

Our season lease price this year will be the same as last year:  $79 for skis, boots and poles; $99 for snowboards and boots.  OR you may purchase the equipment as follows:  $89 for skis, boots and poles; $120 for snowboards and boots.

In response to the growing inquiry about helmets, we have teamed with Giro and Smith to offer helmets to Refuse to Use participants at the reduced range of $50-$80.  The benefit of these helmets is the size adjustability that will provide several years of use for your child.

We thank you in advance for your continued support and we look forward to seeing you soon.

Think snow!

Sincerely,
Tom, Suzy and the Norse House Team

From Jaclyn:

As your children grow, they will be encouraged to try new things. Some of those things may be harmful to their health, if not illegal. The younger a person is when they start using alcohol or other drugs, the greater the risk is for them to have a substance abuse problem. You play a critical role in their choices. Your child will be less likely to use alcohol and other drugs if you: talk about the risks, listen to their feelings and concerns, are involved in their life and they feel close to you. Talking about feelings will help your child identify strong feelings and learn to share them in healthy ways. The key is to start talking about the risks early, before your child is exposed to them.  Here are a few ways to work on communication with your child. Be a good listener. When they speak, give them your full attention, and even repeat what you hear in your own words. Keep your emotions in check, stay calm even if they say something that shocks you.

From CLEA:

From CLEA - Civic Leadership Education and Action

This year's CLEA group, Erelyn Griffin, Lindsey Vachon, Max Cramp, Sam Harrison, Miranda Wilkins, Owen McDonald, and Aiden McCormick, have been working on ideas to bring social justice issues to the forefront and generate reflection and conversations in the L&G community.  To this end, they have organized the assembly for Monday, November 30, to introduce a guest speaker, Dr. Janaki Natarajan, who will give a brief overview of a few social justice themes, and then during Block B have an in-depth discussion of these themes in the Library. The discussion will focus on feminism, discrimination, education, climate justice, and youth activism.  The CLEA students will also conduct and video tape an interview with Janaki prior to the assembly, of which they plan to show segments on LGTV.

Dr. Natarajan, from Bangalore, South India, has spent her life working in and
promoting education for social change.  She has lived and worked in South Africa, Mozambique, Tanzania, Angola, China, India, and Washington, DC.  She currently is the director of the Teaching for Social Justice program at Marlboro Graduate School, in Brattleboro.  Janaki is an engaging and passionate speaker, and she is warmly revered by her students.

You are encouraged to join us in the Library for the Block B discussion!  If you do not plan to attend but have students who would like to participate, please allow them to do so with a pass.  Let us know if you will bring a class so we can arrange seating before the discussion.
