Friday Notes 12-18-15

If you are not receiving Friday Notes by email and would like to or if you would like to be removed from the Friday Notes email list, please email fridaynotes@lelandandgray.org Thank you.

SCHOOL INFO:

Wednesday, December 23rd:

Wednesday, December 23rd will be a half-day for grades 8-12 and all WCSU schools.  The buses will pick up our students at 11:30am and they will be served lunch before they leave for the holiday break.  THERE IS NO SCHOOL FOR 7th GRADERS.  Vacation ends on January 3, 2016 and we will see you back in school on Monday, January 4, 2016.

Powerschool Changes:

The Windham Central Supervisory Union has updated Powerschool to the latest version (9.1) and there is one important change parents need to be aware of, which is to the Parent Access portal.  Parents need to create a new account.  The instructions on how to do that are located here.

Project Feed the Thousands:

The Leland and Gray Chapter of the National Honor Society wraps up Project Feed the Thousands and its winter clothing/bedding drive on December 22.  If you have items to donate and need information as to how to do so, contact advisor Annie Landenberger at alandenberger@lelandandgray.org or 365-7355 x 204.  Heartfelt thanks from NHS --and from the community--for all that's been donated thus far.

Parent Advisory Group:

There will be no Parent Advisory Group this month.  Please contact the Principal directly if you have a topic to discuss.  See you on Tuesday, January 19, 2016.

8th Grade Parents:

8th grade homework assignments build on what has happened that day in class.  The lesson is taught and assignments are typically begun in class.  They need to be completed before the next class.  Without completed homework, students will not be as successful in the next day.  This design is intended to help 8th graders become more independent learners, a skill needed for high school.  Please check Power School daily to see what the day's homework assignment is, and ask to see your child's homework when it is completed.

Juniors & Seniors & Their Parents/Guardians:

Every week Sarah sends out an E-newsletter containing all things college and career. Many of you are on the list to receive it, but many are not! There is so much information pertaining to life after high school, this is the most effective way to communicate it to you. If you do NOT get this e-letter, please email Sarah and request to be added to the list. sgrasso@lelandandgray.org

From the Nurse:

For those students who are immunization exempt due to philosophical, religious, or medical reasons, a form has been sent home for an updated signature. Please return signed forms to the nurse’s office. Exemption forms must be updated yearly. If your child has received an updated immunization, please let the school nurse know as well, so that it can be documented. If you have questions or concerns about immunizations, please contact Jen Burke, School Nurse at Leland and Gray or email jburke@lelandandgray.org.

Scholarship Opportunity:

Marlboro College selects a Renaissance Scholar from every state in the US.  If chosen the recipient will receive 4 FREE years of college.  Find more information here.

Resolutions Every Family with Tweens and Teens Should Make in 2016

by Caroline Knorr at Common Sense Media

With tweens and teens spending more time on media than ever, these strategies can help to keep their experiences safe, productive, and fun all year long.

If you're feeling overwhelmed about managing your tween or teen's screen time, you're in good company. With 8- to 12-year-olds averaging nearly six hours a day on entertainment media and 13- to 18-year-olds racking up a whopping nine hours, according to The Common Sense Census: Media Use by Tweens and Teens, you'd be forgiven if you felt like throwing in the towel. But there's good news:  Parents who are actively involved in their kids' media lives help them consume less, make better choices, learn, and understand more of what they're interacting with. So even if your tweens and teens know way more about media and technology than you do, you can still help them navigate the digital world safely, responsibly, and productively.
