Refuse to Use Kick Off Event:

First Annual Literacy Festival:

Friday, September 2nd from 1:35 to 2:35

On Friday, September 2nd, the Leland and Gray Community will have its first annual Literacy Festival. At the end of the second full day of school, students and adults will get into groups based on the book they read over the summer. In a relaxed environment, students discuss their books and get to hear from adults and peers who they may not normally interact with.

The Literacy Festival sprang from the English department's desire to make our summer reading program both more accessible and more challenging. Previously, students were assigned the same book, based on grade level. With the new program, students choose from a list of diverse books. Teachers and other staff also choose books, so that a student may end up discussing a classic novel with a science teacher, or a sci-fi book with their Spanish teacher. In addition to promoting literacy throughout the Leland and Gray community, we're also looking forward to having a relaxing and fun end to the first few days of school! Please email Sarah Birgé, Literacy Coach, at sbirge@lelandandgray.org if you have any questions.
