SCHOOL INFO:

Radon Update:

Following the board meeting where radon levels were discussed, two things have happened:

1) The school's drinking water has been tested for radon and uranium and "both are under the limits for drinking water in Vermont." (Ian Schrauf, H2O Guy Environmental Services)

2) The radon mitigation work has been completed, to the degree that the suction tubes have been installed in the library and in the water tank room on D-level. Due to the quality of the soil under our building's foundation, we are not yet sure that the scope of the project with sufficiently reduce radon levels. We are exploring the installation of a more powerful exhaust fan to increase suction and lower the radon levels further. Stay tuned!

Service Learning in Ecuador in April 2018:

Have you ever thought of traveling to a foreign country to work beside the natives in a service learning project? Now is your chance to take a meaningful sustainable and unforgettable venture into the heart of Ecuador’s lush Amazonian rain forest, where you’ll find one of the world’s most diverse ecosystems. In Otavalo, you’ll experience the culture and heritage of the city, visiting the Mercados de los Ponchos—a famous market known for its local beautiful textiles—and learning how traditional crafts and meals are prepared when you visit a local family’s home. As you’re immersed in the Quito and Otavalo cultures, you’ll also put your hands to work: building and restoring local schools and promoting social justice.

Leland & Gray Players:

Leland and Gray Players’ last show of its twenty-first
season is Mac Wellman’s  Dracula.  Wellman’s is an “adaptation of
Bram Stoker's classic novel that preserves the Victorian tendencies of
his writing while veering wildly into new vampire territory…. Wickedly
clever language and an often nightmarish world combine to create a
Dracula unlike it's ever been seen before,”  according to Playscripts.com.
The characters are outrageous; the humor is ample and dark; the
student-created production design and incidental music will really
round out a pretty exciting evening, “ director and producer Annie
Landenberger adds.

Dracula plays Thursday, May 25 at 7pm; Friday, May 26 at 7:30 pm;
Saturday, May 27 at 3pm and 7:30; and Sunday, May 28 at 3pm, in Leland
and Gray’s historic Dutton Gymnasium on Route 30 in Townshend. Tickets
are $6 for adults; $4 for student and seniors. Staging is
environmental: Audience may sit at tables in the midst of the action
or on the periphery of the
multi-staged set.

All refreshments and delicacies are by donation. For more information
and to reserve in advance, contact Annie Landenberger at 802-365-7355 x 159 or
alandenberger@lelandandgray.org.

Museum of the Historical Society of Windham County:

Community Service opportunities:

Museum of the Historical Society of Windham County: The Museum opens Memorial Day weekend and is open weekend afternoons throughout the summer and into the early Fall.  It would be an ideal situation for any students interested in history and/or students who have computer skills.

Also, as chair of Green Up for the Town of Newfane, I've received inquiries from residents who have asked for help on trash clean up on their roads, even after Green Up weekend.  There are a couple of spots in town that could use a young pair of knees and strong pair of arms!

For more information about these opportunities, please contact Laura Wallingford-Bacon at willvill123@gmail.com

Camp Daybreak:

Know someone interested in giving back to their community or who could use a supportive experience this summer?

Camp Daybreak is a program that serves Vermont kids ages 8-11 with a range of social, emotional, and behavioral needs by pairing them with a high school volunteer. These relationships are extremely powerful for both our campers and our volunteers. Our campers, many of whom would not be successful in traditional camp settings, are provided with constant support and encouragement while our volunteers receive a unique hands on training on mental health conditions and kids. Everyone has fun and leaves Camp Daybreak being positively affected.

Join us and help create a life changing experience for our campers and volunteers! Space is limited.
See: www.campdaybreak.org

General Information:
Camp Daybreak
Dates: August 6 - August 13, 2017 (Campers arrive on Monday August 7th)
Location: Camp Ta-Kum-Ta, South Hero, VT
Website: www.campdaybreak.org

Camp Daybreak creates a sense of community that extends beyond the camp session. Not only are our high school volunteers exposed to a group of like-minded peers but they are given the opportunity to contribute to their community. This intensive experience can create life long friendships and keep volunteers coming back year after year.

Please feel free to be in touch and we hope to see you this summer!

Rock River Players :

Rock River Players present "The Shadow People," an old time
radio drama Friday, May 12 at 7 PM at the Williamsville Hall.

According to director Debbi Reed-Savory, "The Hall of Fantasy was a series
of radio dramas dedicated to scaring the living daylights out of its
listeners."   "The Shadow People" by Richard Thorne aired in the early
1950s with professional sound effects and cast.  Reed-Savory adds, "The
Rock River Players' chilling version will be more of a journey than a
polished production. lt'll be full of fright, as well as fun, as all who
attend will be participating in providing homemade on-cue sound effects.
How loud can you scream?   Even the after-show refreshments will be spooky.
Join the RRP to confront our most powerful fear, the dark.  Turn the lights
out, only if you dare."

The Rock River Players launched in August 2015 and have since presented
several productions with the intent of growing community through the lively
arts.  The production following the one-night old time radio show offering
is The Fantasticks! July 20 to 23.

The Williamsville Hall is located on Dover Road in the village of
Williamsville. For more information on the May 12 event, contact Debbi
Reed-Savory at deb.reedsavory@gmail.com.  For information on the Rock River

Player, contact Annie Landenberger  at verbatimvt@gmail.com or 802-348-7156
