Journey East Celebration:
Leland and Gray Community Celebrates Journey East Director Tom Connor
On Friday, April 29th at 7 PM, Journey East 2016 students perform “Dare to Dream,” a musical theater production in the Leland and Gray Main Gym. This public intercultural performance will be immediately followed in Dutton Gym by a celebration of Journey East co-founder and program director Tom Connor.
All families, students, and educators who have participated in a Journey East event, from back in 1999 hosting Inner Mongolian guests to today welcoming their children home from abroad, are invited to this joyous honor of their extraordinary contributions to our community. Please bring a potluck dessert and your stories of collaborating with Tom, our Chinese guests, and travels with Journey East.

8th Grade Parents:
8th grade homework assignments build on what has happened that day in class. The lesson is taught and assignments are typically begun in class. They need to be completed before the next class. Without completed homework, students will not be as successful in the next day. This design is intended to help 8th graders become more independent learners, a skill needed for high school. Please check Power School daily to see what the day's homework assignment is, and ask to see your child's homework when it is completed.

Windham Regional Career Center Summer Program:
The Windham Regional Career Center is happy to announce our second 2 week summer program for your girls focused on STE(a)M (Science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) at the Windham Regional Career Center.
Our goal is to introduce your daughters to STEM, encourage some of them to pursue an exciting and profitable career in industries that are desperately in need of women. This experience will provide both education and fun for the girls.
Listed below are some of the classes to give you an idea of what they might be doing-the girls who attended last year will notice new offerings this year. We have some wonderful new teachers as well!
Algebra Through Tiles – Explore algebraic concepts as you model them with tiles that make these concepts come alive with meaning.
Bridges – Construct bridges and test their strength. Try your hand at virtual steel bridge design and load test it. Will it be strong enough to carry the load of a tractor trailer?
Digital Photography - Learn to use your phone, tablet, computer or stand-a-lone camera. Learn to size images, upload and place into Digital Portfolio.
Food Science - Have a gastronomic experience!
Fiber Art – Make a weaving device and design woven placemats. Macramé friendship bracelets.
Geometric Art - Discover geometry’s role in the art of many cultures. You will experience Geometry as a way of thinking and seeing the world that is alive in many cultures and art forms around the world.
Math: The Heart of Hidden Reality - Uncover the magic hidden universe of mathematics. Accept it and you will experience a new way of thinking, which can enrich your life and empower you to better understand the world and our place in it.
Science of Baking – How and why do combinations of ingredients affect baked goods?
Straw Bale House Construction - Design and create a straw bale house model. Video Filming - Create a video on your device, upload it to YouTube, crop video and add titles and credits
Wooden Toys - Beginning Students: Create hopping bunny Intermediate students: Make a dragon.
Unit Origami: Multidimensional Transformations - Fascinating fun await the origami devotee who follows along the path to creating original multidimensional forms that are practically architectural in nature.
Camp will be 4 hours (9:00-1:00) a day at the Career Center, running July 11-15 and July 18-22
Breakfast & lunch are included (9:00-9:30 & 12:30-1:00). There is no cost for the girls.
WRCC will also provide free transportation for the campers. We will arrange with each school pick up and drop off times and location at a later date.

Community Hope & Action:
The Community Hope and Action group will be putting on a talent show on Saturday, April 16th at the Townshend Town Hall. The talent show will include a free dinner from 6-7pm, and the performances will take place from 7-9pm.
This is an alcohol-free, family-friendly event that is appropriate for all ages.
Participant registration is now open if you would like to perform. Do you like to sing, dance, tell jokes, or act? Do you have another talent to share? Registration forms are available at the Townshend Public Library, the Townshend Town Hall, and at the Leland & Gray Union Middle/High School front office.

The Community Hope and Action group holds a series of monthly events to bring people together for food and fun. The vision of the group is to create “a community where people work together to experience and celebrate life to the fullest.” The talent show is sponsored in part by the Vermont Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Spring into Health 5K:
The 7th annual Grace Cottage “Spring into Health” 5K is fast approaching! The event is held on Saturday May 7, 2016 and the race begins at 8:30am at our usual starting point in front of the Townshend Elementary School at 8:30 AM. Registration is now open!
The course will take us from the Townshend Common out onto Route 35 North running past Grace Cottage Hospital and Messenger Valley Pharmacy. Our turn around spot is about 1.5 miles from the start and then we return to the Townshend Common on Route 35 going south. While all are welcome to walk if they prefer, the race will be officially timed by 3CRace.com, so you will know quickly you traversed the route right when you finish. Even though it is early in the season, it will be a great opportunity for you to set a new personal record in the 5K.
The cost of the race is again $20; only $15 if you register by May 4; and FREE if you are 12 or under!! If you are one of the first 100 to register, not only will you save $5, you will get a performance T-shirt designed by Leland and Gray High School student, Joel Emmons. Joel won our logo design contest (and a $50 check) and we are very excited by his design.
After the race, cool off with some water provided by Cota and Cota, as well as some nutritious snacks. We will have our annual kids’ Fun Run around the Common at around 9:15AM and then hand out awards to our fastest female and male finishers. And, back by popular demand, is our annual Drew’s All-Natural salsa giveaway, which is a raffle at the end of our event.

There are a variety of summer athletics camps offered at Leland & Gray.
