Friday Notes 11/18/22

SCHOOL INFO

November 18, 2022

Dear L&G Families:

We started off our week with an assembly honoring some community veterans to celebrate Veteran’s Day.  Mr. Benn Nicholson (a para in our HOME program), Mr. Kevin Burke (technology teacher) and (in absentia) Mr. Luis Vargas (our SAP) were all honored and joined by local residents Mr. Robert Litchfield and Mr. Charlie Marchant to share stories and speak about why they chose to serve their country in the manner in which they did.  It was a very engaging and informative presentation!

Thursday, we were visited by the Department of Transportation’s newly named snowplow, “Snowbody’s Business” which was named by a “name the plow” contest by L&G staff and students!

We are now approaching the holiday season, and these times are a celebration for most families, but we recognize that the winter season - with cold weather and family drama - can also be challenging.  If you or your family struggles with heat, food scarcity or other challenges, please be sure to reach out to our new Home-To-School Liasion, Ms. Alicia Carey at acarey@windhamcentral.org and she might be able to find some resources for your family.

In the meantime, on behalf of the entire faculty and staff of L&G, we wish you and your families a very happy Thanksgiving!

Bob Thibault

Friday Notes 11/4/22

SCHOOL INFO

November 4, 2022

Dear L&G Families:

We have an exciting weekend ahead with our Varsity Girls headed to the Championship game in Manchester on Saturday at 12:00pm!

We are also excited to announce the beginning of our After School clubs available to youth in grades 6 - 8. The program features clubs that vary each session, giving students the opportunity to join activities that match their interests. Middle school is a time to explore interests and get involved! Joining clubs and out-of-school time activities is a natural extension of the school day. Each club is led by an activity coach or club advisor. Each club will also have goals and outcomes each session, such as (but not limited to): games, competitions, contests, showcase events, performances or service projects. Our after school clubs will begin Monday, November 7th. The clubs will run from 2:45pm - 4:30pm on their respective days with a light snack provided. Please note, there will be NO late buses provided. Students will need to be picked up no later than 4:30pm. Also, there will be NO after school activities on Wednesday due to winter activities.

The clubs being offered to all Leland & Gray middle school students are: Hey Help! / Homework Club with Jenna Greenbaum (Tuesday & Thursday): Hey Help! is a program designed to provide a place for a certified teacher to help your child to get a start on and help with their daily homework and class material. All students who have homework and/or need extra help are welcome to attend. All students are expected to come to the club with all homework materials and a book to read. Open Studio Club with Paula Rasanen (Thursday): A student-led opportunity to explore art and music. Students are invited to bring lyrics and chords for songs they would like to learn, or they can create their own music. Available materials include piano, ukulele, guitar, Garageband recording software, percussive instruments, and studio art supplies such as acrylic and watercolor paints. Students can experiment with learning and recording songs, creating instruments out of found objects, learning basic ukulele chords, and more! Weight Training / Fitness Club with Luis Vargas (Tuesday & Thursday): Enjoy a comfortable and confident workout space and meet others with the same goals. Get motivated by fusing music, movement, science, light weight training and lots of fun! Build muscle and get stronger in our lightly equipped Rebel Nation weight room. Enjoy low-impact activities for strength building. Use the power of your body weight and gravity to reach your fitness goals. Dungeons and Dragons with Brooke Lawrence (Tuesday & Thursday): This club will start Tuesday 11/15. This is a student-led structured, yet open-ended role-playing game. We have 2 high school students who will lead this program as Dungeon Masters. Typically, one player takes on the role of Dungeon Master (DM- games referee and storyteller) while the others each control a single character, representing an individual in a fictional setting. The players form an adventuring party who explore fantasy worlds together as they embark on epic quests and level up in experience. Arts & Crafts Club with Marina Mavroleon-Folsom (Tuesday & Thursday): Projects and art for students to express themselves and promote creativity. This includes acrylic paint, stretched canvases, brushes, aprons, cups, sponges, Q-tips, anything else they may need and more… All you have to do is show up, socialize, and have fun. Our after school art and crafts club is perfect for all ages and no other materials are needed! Gaming Club with Luis Vargas (Monday & Friday): Gaming club is an opportunity for students to socialize and have fun together based on their hobby of playing games. Whether it's card games, board games, strategic games or video games, students will have an opportunity to play multi and single player games, and spend time discussing gaming strategies and preferences.
