Friday Notes 3/26/21

SCHOOL INFO:

March 26, 2021

Dear L&G Families:

The weather is getting warmer.  The Governor is “opening the spigot.”  Vaccinations are coming out for everyone (over 16!).  The spring seems to be a time of hope this year, which is pretty different than a year ago.  Many of you have heard that the CDC has changed its distancing guidance from 6’ to 3’ for K12 schools.  You’ve also, no doubt, heard that our elementary schools are planning 5-day in-person learning beginning after April vacation.  So, what is L&G doing???

Well, as of today, the Agency of Education (AOE) and the Vermont Department of Health (VDH) have yet to release new updated guidance, so we are still following the most recent updated version from the fall.  We are, however, beginning to make plans for 3’ distancing.  It is our hope that we will be able to offer 4-day in person learning for all of our students once the guidance changes.  This will require some new rules and expectations but will give our hybrid students a great opportunity to be here much more!  Unlike the elementary schools in our district, we will still plan to run our Remote Academy through the end of the school year, so that families in that program will be allowed to remain remote.  Please stay tuned for a flurry of information, once we have the new guidance, and have the opportunity to review it and develop our plans for “reopening 3.0.”

Extended Vacations & Travel

Some families are alerting us that they intend to take extended vacations around the upcoming April break or that they will be travelling with their children out of state.  Please be aware that while some travel restrictions have been lifted for vaccinated people, virtually none of our student body qualifies for this exemption and return from out of state travel will require quarantining before returning to school, resulting in additional lost days of instruction.  This will be particularly noticeable if we are 4-days a week after April break.  Please use thoughtful consideration when planning your family vacations.

Some families have made the choice to keep kids home out of “an abundance of caution” in certain situations, based on people awaiting test results, etc.  To clarify from a record-keeping perspective, any student who is required to quarantine will receive an AE (excused absence) as their attendance code for the day.  Students who are voluntarily quarantining will receive an A as an attendance code (this latter example applies to family travel described in the above paragraph).  This will only impact those students whose total absences exceed what is allowed in our attendance policy - and will likely receive an absence letter at some point.  Excused absences will not count towards that letter.  In all cases, students should continue to do the assigned work.  Teachers will be having special zoom meetings on Wednesdays for students in quarantine, and they will alert those students via email with the link.

Picture Days NEXT WEEK

The new, rescheduled dates for pictures are:

  • Cohort A & 6th graders Tuesday, March 30

  • Cohort B & Remote Academy Friday, April 2

Ordering forms were already sent home, and can be still used.  Additionally you may order online at www.geskusprint.com and our unique code is JAR59H6E.  We ask for all students to participate so that we’ll have pictures for the yearbook!

School Budget

We send out a collective thank you to all who voted for our school budget.  We really appreciate the efforts that taxpayers have made to continually fund our programming for your kids  especially during this incredibly challenging time!

End of Year Events

While the governor has already announced that we’ll have “normal” graduations, the AOE has yet to publicize any guidelines for end of year events, like proms and graduations.  This is expected to happen in the next week or so, and, as with the distancing guidelines, we’ll study the release and plan accordingly.  So, please stay tuned for information about these events.  We really want to celebrate the class of 2021 who have had two of their most important years of schooling dramatically interrupted by the pandemic.

Reminders

  • Spring sports will start on April 5 (baseball pitchers and catchers 3/29)

  • Travel out of state requires quarantining for any unvaccinated (students) people.  Please consult with our nurse, Jorda Daigneault if you have any questions about how this might impact your family.  This is especially important as we get closer to April break.

Thanks and have a great weekend!

Friday Notes 3/19/21

SCHOOL INFO:

March 19, 2021

Dear L&G Families:

I know that in the past few weeks, you’ve each received several of my “COVID Update” emails alerting you to positive cases in our school community and that this information can be very stressful for all of us.  Additionally, we’ve also had other people facing quarantine due to “close contact” to those affected.  These are certainly challenging times but we’re confident that if each member of our “family” continues to treat COVID with the respect it deserves by appropriate behavior, we believe we can slow the spread of things here, and continue to stay open for our students.  I will tell you now that the biggest threat to staying open and having to shift to a remote environment (even temporarily) is the shortage of substitute teachers.  We are very thankful to the few that we have, but our resources are stretched thin and even a couple of absences can disrupt our daily schedule.

Absence From School

Some families have made the choice to keep kids home out of “an abundance of caution” in certain situations, based on people awaiting test results, etc.  To clarify from a record-keeping perspective, any student who is required to quarantine will receive an AE (excused absence) as their attendance code for the day.  Students who are voluntarily quarantining will receive an A as an attendance code.  This will only impact those students whose total absences exceed what is allowed in our attendance policy - and will likely receive an absence letter at some point.  Excused absences will not count towards that letter.  In all cases, students should continue to do the assigned work.  Teachers will be having special zoom meetings on Wednesdays for students in quarantine, and they will alert those students via email, with the link.

Parent Conferences

We hope that everyone who wanted or needed a parent conference was able to schedule one.  If not, please reach out to the teacher individually and see if they have time to connect with you one-on-one.

Board Meeting

As I described last week, the school board met this past Monday and voted to start up the elementary schools in our district 5 days a week, beginning after April vacation.  We are awaiting changes from the AOE and the VDH on distancing guidelines before any such changes would occur here.  I suspect those changes might come, so stay tuned!

Reminders

  • Spring sports will start on April 5 (baseball pitchers and catchers 3/29)

  • Travel out of state requires quarantining for any unvaccinated (students) people.  Please consult with our nurse, Jorda Daigneaultif you have any questions about how this might impact your family.  This is especially important as we get closer to April break.

Friday Notes 3/12/21

SCHOOL INFO:

March 12, 2021

Dear L&G Families:

It is with great excitement that I inform you that our faculty and staff are getting the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine this afternoon!!!  The entire WCSU staff will be coming to L&G today and then again on April 2nd.  There will be no disruptions to school as a result!

Progress Reports

Quarter 3 progress reports were sent home earlier this week.

Parent Conferences

Teachers should be emailing  invitations to each family and guardians can select their time slot  via signup.com.  Conferences will be held on Wednesday, March 17 from 12-3pm and on Thursday, March 18 from 2-7pm.  Thursday will be an early release day for cohort B, with dismissal at 11:30am.  Busses will run at that time for dismissal.

Board Meeting

This Monday night, the West River School Board will be having their monthly meeting.  The agenda includes a discussion of possible reopening plans for the spring, which might include 5 days for the elementary schools, but is unlikely to change much for L&G unless the Agency of Education and Vermont Department of Health modify the distancing guidance.  I know there’s been a lot in the news about this, and I wanted to express that as long as the 6’ distancing exists for grades 7-12, we must operate on a hybrid schedule.  We aren’t fully sure what might come as we get closer to herd immunity this spring.  The agenda (with login link) is on the website.

Reminders

  • Thursday, March 18th will be an early release day at 11:30am

  • This weekend is Daylight Savings - Spring ahead 1 hour!!!

  • Spring sports will start on April 5 (baseball pitchers and catchers 3/29)

Thanks and have a great weekend!

Journey East is a semester-long program, where students enroll in Asian studies and performing arts program for their spring semester of 2022. During this academy, students will travel to China for a month-long performing arts exchange. Before departing for China students study Chinese language, history, and culture. They also work together to create a unique performance that can be enjoyed by limited English-speaking audiences. Upon returning from China they will perform their show locally and continue their study of China by completing a personal research project.  We are having an information night on Tuesday, March 16th from 7-8 where you can learn more about the program and ask any questions.  Here is the zoom link:https://zoom.us/j/94051341626?pwd=dVVyNytnY3dOT1pEbk5KakFXTFZvQT09

Friday Notes 3/5/21

SCHOOL INFO:

Principal Letter:

March 5, 2021

Dear members of the L&G community:

This week we welcomed back cohort B from February vacation, and not a whole lot has changed - protocol wise - for our students.  We are looking forward to seeing cohort A on Monday!  I'm happy for our staff, as I’m sure you’ve already heard - the governor has put school staff on the vaccination list beginning next week.  We’ll keep you updated on the status of the process for our teachers and staff.  On a related note, we did discover that we had a positive COVID-19 case with one of our staff members this week.  In consultation with the VDH and our school nurse we have concluded that, due to vacation and the facts of the case, no direct contact with anyone else in our community happened, and no contact tracing was required.  It is very important for us to continue our vigilance by following the Governor’s Emergency Order and the Agency of Education guidelines for school operation.

Building Update

Most of our classrooms and common spaces have already passed the air flow requirements established by the school board.  We have 2 classrooms still not in use at this time, but during vacation our main gym and activity room have been reopened and we are using the activity room for half of our lunches.

Senior Recognition

This coming week we will celebrate our senior athletes as they play their last regular season home basketball games.  Please tune in to watch the games via our YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCz1sJTbXyJp4HwZxo8qA4iw).  Send pics of your “viewing party” to Sue Haskins at shaskins@lelandandgray.org and we’ll share it out on social media honoring our seniors.

Student Recognition

Our January Elks (HS) Student of the Month was Lily Dutton and our MS Student of Month was Amaya Arnold.

I hope everyone has a great weekend and stay healthy!!
