March Student of the Month:

Middle School:

Jack Spengler-  His attendance remote and in person has been excellent.  He is hard working and has made a lot of progress this year in spite of all the hardships.  I think that is getting well prepared to start high school off on the right foot.

High School:

Parker Richardson-  Parker Richardson, 2 nominations: Parker asks for and accepts help when needed, he balances his social and work time, and he completes all of his assignments on time, including his remote work. He is pleasant to work with, and he is kind to others. AND  Parker has been a rock star in the classroom, whether during his in-person or remote learning days.  He is very conscientious and his work is done on time with care and accuracy.  I appreciate his ability to stay on top of what is being asked of him by his teachers, especially on the three remote learning days.

L&G Co-Curricular Calendar:

SPECTATORS AT SCHOOL-BASED SPORTS EVENTS

The number of spectators should be limited as much as possible and measures should be put in place to ensure social distancing between households. Interactions between spectators and participants should be minimized before, during and after events. At no time shall the total number of spectators exceed current limits on event size – currently 150 for outdoor events.

VISITORS ARE ASKED TO LEAVE THE EVENT IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING THE CONCLUSION OF THE CONTEST.

Spring Sports 2021 - Leland & Gray Union Middle/High School Player/Parent Guidelines

1) Track schools - during any running events, participants will not be required to wear masks. Similar to what we did in the fall in cross-country, students should be wearing masks until they go to the start line. They can then remove them. Students should put them back on once the event is complete.

In addition, pole vaulters do not have to wear masks when they vault. Again, while they are waiting, masks need to be on.

2) Student traveling out of state

If an unvaccinated student leaves the state to travel, to visit a college or participate in a non-school competition (such as AAU) when they come back to Vermont, they can immediately resume normal activities as long as they have a negative test within 3 days of their return to check for COVID. No quarantine is required.

At L&G we will not allow the student to return to their team until they receive a negative test. This is to prevent full-team shutdowns.

3) As of May 1st, the size of outdoor events will increase from 150 to 300. As of June 1st the number will increase from 300 to 900 for both participants and spectators. As long as spectators are distanced from participants, you could potentially have 300 participants and 300 spectators as of May 1st, and 900 participants and 900 spectators as of June 1st. It is also noted that any vaccinated individuals do not count against the 150/300/900 limits.

Listed below is a link to the Vermont Step forward plan. As you will see, we are currently in Step 1, we will go to Step 2 on May 1st and to Step 3 on June 1st.

                         https://www.vermont.gov/vermont-forward#gsc.tab=0

4) As of now, masks are still required in all sports (except for noted changes in track).

WE ASK THAT ANY PERSON EXPERIENCING ANY SYMPTOMS RELATED TO COVID-19, PLEASE DON’T ATTEND THE EVENT BEING HELD AT LELAND AND GRAY.

Green Up Day, by nature, is an activity of social distancing as citizens of all ages get outside and clean up miles of Vermont roads. “Participating in Green Up Day is one small way to find some normalcy in our tilted world,” says one Green Up Day Coordinator, Robin Rieske. Green Up Day provides a sense of commitment to where we live and to each other. It is about healthy surroundings, and connecting our communities with a goal for common greatness. This well-loved community event will help contribute to the physical, social and mental health of Vermonters as much as their Green Up activities will help beautify our state.

So, swing by Leland & Gray on Saturday May 1st from 9am to noon to pick up your trash bags and receive a goodie bag as well!

Filled bags can be dropped at Townshend transfer station on Saturday May 1st free of charge from 8am - 2pm. Please use the correct locations at that site, practice social distancing and protect yourselves with masks and gloves.

Friday Notes 4/16/21

SCHOOL INFO:

April 16, 2021

Dear L&G Families:

This is one of the most important communications you’ll get this spring as it details significant changes to our programming beginning after April Vacation.  So please read carefully!  Due to the release of new Agency of Education and Department of Health guidelines for schools, we will now be shifting some practices:

  • VERY IMPORTANT NOTE: Monday, April 26th will be a fully remote day for all students.  They should take attendance via the survey received in their email and work on assignments in their Google Classrooms.  This day is necessary for our staff to properly prepare the classrooms for double the number of students.  Much furniture moving will have taken place over break by the custodial staff, but teachers will need the day to set up their rooms with proper distancing.  We recognize that this is not ideal, especially coming off of a vacation week, but it is essential for our operation to be smooth when all students return to school on Tuesday.

  • Distancing in grades 7-12 will move from 6’ to 3’ - This means we are bringing in ALL students and eliminating the hybrid model of cohorts A and B.

    • Students/families who opted back in January for the Remote Academy will still work remotely through the end of the school year, so no changes for those people.

    • Hybrid students will now come to school 4-days per week (M, T, Th, and F)

      • Wednesdays will remain as “remote days” due to the need to keep the remote academy functioning and to effectively provide support for any quarantining students.

    • One way hallways, signing out of classrooms, etc will continue through the rest of the school year.

    • Adults in the building are still required to maintain 6’ distancing from each other and between themselves and the students.

    • Masks will still be required by everyone, except while eating.

  • We will no longer be conducting health screenings of children or adults upon arrival at school, or on the bus in the morning.  Staff and students and/or their families should self-assess by completing an exposure and symptom screening before departing for school each day.  By arrival at school, students and staff are attesting to having completed these daily screenings and that they are symptom free. The COVID-19 symptoms are as follows:

    • Cough

    • Fever (100.4 or greater)

    • Shortness of breath, or difficulty breathing

    • Chills

    • Fatigue

    • Muscle pain or body aches

    • Headache

    • Sore throat

    • Loss of taste or smell

    • Congestion or runny nose

    • Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea

  • Travel questions will no longer be asked.  Again, as with the health screening, students and staff by the nature of coming into the building are attesting to following whatever travel guidelines exist.  We encourage non-vaccinated students and staff to stay home while awaiting their negative test results, if you choose to travel.

  • Lunchtime - Due to the increased number of students, and the 6’ distancing required (grades 7-12) for eating (due to no masks), we will shift our bell schedule to have 2 high school lunch periods.  Half of our HS students will take lunch in between B and C blocks, like they’ve been doing, but the other half will eat lunch after C-block and before FLEX.  Please be prepared for this extra gap of time, by having snacks handy.  Lunches will also no longer need to be ordered in the morning during Advisory/House.  All students (6-12) will be able to go through the cafeteria line and select from a larger variety of pre-packaged or served meal options.  Like with breakfast in the morning, this will continue to be free.  Some additional items may be available in our a la carte option, but those items will have prices clearly marked.

    • MS will still have one lunch period

      • 6th grade will still eat in their classrooms (after going to get the food in the cafeteria)

      • 7th & 8th graders will be assigned an eating location based on their period 3 class; this will happen in either the library or in the cafeteria and C-level lobby, if needed

    • HS students will also be divided into 2 groups, based on their C-block class

      • Some will eat in the library (see your teacher for details)

      • Some will eat in the cafeteria, C-level lobby, or outdoors in good weather

  • Due to the current understanding of how COVID-19 spreads, our cleaning protocols are changing as well.  We will continue to wash and disinfect commonly touched surfaces, but will stop using misting tools (after school hours) to sanitize classrooms, per the AOE guidance.

All of us here at school fully understand how hard this school year has been on our students.  The number of times we’ve changed things, the limited in-person schooling, and the enormous amount of communication home has been overwhelming.  We sincerely hope that this is the final modification to daily life at school, until the fall!

Please feel free to reach out with any questions you might have.

Very sincerely,

Bob Thibault

Principal
