SCHOOL INFO:

West River Modified Union Education District to Organize:

The legal voters of the West River Modified Union Education District, comprising the voters of the Towns of Brookline, Jamaica, Newfane, and Townshend for prekindergarten through Grade 12 and the Town of Windham for Grades 7-12 will meet at the Leland and Gray Middle High School in Townshend, VT, on Monday June 26th at 7:00 pm.
Immediately following this Special Meeting, the West River Modified Union Education District will organize and elect its very first officers.

“There is excitement around creating a new school district and further unifying the Leland and Gray towns,” stated Windham Central Supervisory Union Superintendent Bill Anton.
The creation of the West River Modified Union Education District is the result of the work of the Leland & Gray Towns Act 46 Study Committee.  The elected officials who will make up the new school district board have been meeting informally as a gathering of citizens.
“The members of the new board are excited and ready to continue the work of the study committee.  Taking the plan for the new district from the 10,000 foot level to the operational level is challenging but rewarding work,” according to Joe Winrich, Study Committee Chair.

Community Service:

All incoming 9th, 10th, and 11th graders have community service requirements for graduation.  9th graders must complete 40 hours, 10th graders must complete 35 hours and 11th graders must complete 25 hours.  Check out the website for more information:

Radon Update:

Following the board meeting where radon levels were discussed, two things have happened:

1) The school's drinking water has been tested for radon and uranium and "both are under the limits for drinking water in Vermont." (Ian Schrauf, H2O Guy Environmental Services)

2) The radon mitigation work has been completed, levels have dropped though two areas are still below recommended levels (Library and Weight Room).  The mitigation company is researching larger exhaust fans to improve suction.  Dutton work is scheduled for June.

Host an International Student Next Year:

Have you ever wanted to learn about another culture but don't have the opportunity to travel? Do you want to learn some phrases in another language before you do travel? Become a volunteer host family with CIEE and help make a student's dreams come true at the same time! Families sign on to host as volunteers and accept a student into their home as a member of their family by providing a bed (student can share a room with a child of same gender and within 4 years of age), sharing 3 meals a day, and helping coordinate transportation when necessary. We are currently seeking one or two more families at Leland and Gray to host a student from Spain, Mexico or Azerbaijan for the upcoming school year. Contact Peggy Dolan at 802-380-330 or pdolan@svcable.net or visit www.ciee.org/host , or Ms. Cissé in room A4 for more information."

Service Learning in Ecuador in April 2018:

Have you ever thought of traveling to a foreign country to work beside the natives in a service learning project? Now is your chance to take a meaningful sustainable and unforgettable venture into the heart of Ecuador’s lush Amazonian rain forest, where you’ll find one of the world’s most diverse ecosystems. In Otavalo, you’ll experience the culture and heritage of the city, visiting the Mercados de los Ponchos—a famous market known for its local beautiful textiles—and learning how traditional crafts and meals are prepared when you visit a local family’s home. As you’re immersed in the Quito and Otavalo cultures, you’ll also put your hands to work: building and restoring local schools and promoting social justice.

Community Service opportunities:

Museum of the Historical Society of Windham County: The Museum opens Memorial Day weekend and is open weekend afternoons throughout the summer and into the early Fall.  It would be an ideal situation for any students interested in history and/or students who have computer skills.

Also, as chair of Green Up for the Town of Newfane, I've received inquiries from residents who have asked for help on trash clean up on their roads, even after Green Up weekend.  There are a couple of spots in town that could use a young pair of knees and strong pair of arms!

Camp Daybreak:

Know someone interested in giving back to their community or who could use a supportive experience this summer?

Camp Daybreak is a program that serves Vermont kids ages 8-11 with a range of social, emotional, and behavioral needs by pairing them with a high school volunteer. These relationships are extremely powerful for both our campers and our volunteers. Our campers, many of whom would not be successful in traditional camp settings, are provided with constant support and encouragement while our volunteers receive a unique hands on training on mental health conditions and kids. Everyone has fun and leaves Camp Daybreak being positively affected.

Join us and help create a life changing experience for our campers and volunteers! Space is limited.
See: www.campdaybreak.org

General Information:
Camp Daybreak
Dates: August 6 - August 13, 2017 (Campers arrive on Monday August 7th)
Location: Camp Ta-Kum-Ta, South Hero, VT
Website: www.campdaybreak.org
Contact: Dan Osman, Director (dan@pear-vt.org)

Camp Daybreak creates a sense of community that extends beyond the camp session. Not only are our high school volunteers exposed to a group of like-minded peers but they are given the opportunity to contribute to their community. This intensive experience can create life long friendships and keep volunteers coming back year after year.

Please feel free to be in touch and we hope to see you this summer!
