Friday Notes 12-20-13

BASKETBALL TIME CHANGE FOR WEEKDAY LEAGUE GAMES
The Marble Valley League has changed the times of league double headers during the week from 6pm and 7:30pm to 5:30pm and 7pm. This change has been made for both Boys and Girls. Please be aware of the time changes that affect our games at Leland and Gray. If you have any questions, please contact me via email at mtesto@lelandandgray.org

8TH GRADE GIRLS BASKETBALL
After a sluggish first half, the 7-8 girls basketball team defeated Dummerston 45-16 to move to 3-0 on the young season.  Eight players scored led by Julianne with 11 and Mariah with 10.  We have a Thursday game @ Putney to finish up our pre-holiday schedule.

HUNGRY HEARTS FILM
The Hungry Heart: A Film about Prescription Drug Abuse in Vermont comes to Leland and Gray. The Hungry Heart provides an intimate look at the often hidden world of prescription drug addiction. We meet St. Albans pediatrician Fred Holmes, who works with patients struggling with this disease.

In addition to students and parents/guardians involved in co-curricular activities, this free event is open to all students, staff, and community members. Leland and Gray will feature the movie in the Dutton Gym on Wednesday, January 29th at 6:30pm (snow-date: February 5th). Before the film, a reception for all moviegoers will be provided beginning at 5:45pm, sponsored by the West River Valley Thrives Coalition.

Afterwards, filmmaker Bess O’Brien, Dr. Holmes, his patients, and family members will present and answer questions from the audience. Earlier that day, they will present at a school assembly and meet with doctors at Grace Cottage Hospital to discuss the problem of prescription drug abuse in our area. The film shines a light on the healing power of conversation and the need for connection that many young addicts yearn for, but do not have in their lives. Throughout the movie, we see the many faces and diverse populations of addiction, and their continued search for a life of recovery. Please attend this unique opportunity for our community to learn together.

A NOTE FROM THE SAP!
With the cold weather moving in we have seen an increase in colds and cold-like symptoms.  When we feel this way, there is a tendency to the store and pick up some NyQuil or Sudafed and hope our cold gets better. However, did you know that the active ingredient in over 100 cold and cough medicines is Dextromethorphan, or DXM, and it is the most commonly abused over-the-counter medicine. One in every ten teenagers has reported abusing cough medicines to get high. Large doses can cause hallucinations, impaired judgment, vomiting, and loss of muscle movement.   Be careful with how much cold medicine you take, and make sure that your children are not taking more than the recommended amount. Remember, sending your children to school with cold medicine violates the school’s drug policy unless it is kept with the nurse.  Also, try some homeopathic methods such as Boiron Coldcalm.  For more information visit http://www.webmd.com/parenting/teen-abuse-cough-medicine-9/

A NOTE FROM THE SCHOOL NURSE
The following article is from the CDC Vital Signs:
Drinking and driving can be deadly, especially for teens
Fewer teens are drinking and driving, but this risky behavior is still a major threat.
  • Drinking and driving among teens in high school has gone down by 54% since 1991. Still, high school teens drive after drinking about 2.4 million times a month.
  • 85% of teens in high school who report drinking and driving in the past month also say they binge drank. In the survey, binge drinking was defined as having 5 or more alcoholic drinks within a couple of hours.
  • 1 in 5 teen drivers involved in fatal crashes had some alcohol in their system in 2010. Most of these drivers (81%) had BACs* higher than the legal limit for adults.
*Blood alcohol concentration. It is illegal for adults to drive with a BAC of .08% or higher. It is illegal for anyone under age 21 to drive after drinking any alcohol in all US states.
Preventing Teen Drinking and Driving: What Works
  • Minimum legal drinking age (MLDA) laws in every state make it illegal to sell alcohol to anyone under age 21. Research has shown that enforcement of MLDA laws using alcohol retailer compliance checks has reduced retail sales of alcohol to those under the legal drinking age.
  • Zero tolerance laws in every state make it illegal for those under age 21 to drive after drinking any alcohol. Research has demonstrated that these laws have reduced drinking and driving crashes involving teens.
  • Graduated driver licensing (GDL) systems help new drivers get more experience under less risky conditions. As teens move through stages, they gain privileges, such as driving at night or driving with passengers. Every state has GDL, but the specific rules vary. Research indicates that GDL systems prevent crashes and save lives.
  • Parental involvement, with a focus on monitoring and restricting what new drivers are allowed to do, helps keep new drivers safe as they learn to drive. Parents can consider creating and signing a parent-teen driving agreement with their teens. Research has shown that when parents establish and enforce the “rules of the road”, new drivers report lower rates of risky driving, traffic violations, and crashes.
