THANK
YOU!
I wanted to thank Karren Meyer, Student Council and
all the faculty and staff that made Field Day such a success…that was awesome!
The energy and the excitement that I saw from the students participating in all
sorts of events once again made me realize how special L&G is and will continue
to be…!

ENVIRONMENTAL OUTDOOR CLUB
Environmental Outdoor Club - New to L&G! - We meet every
Thursday during middle and high school lunch with Ms. Davis, and Ms. Nyzio.
Some issues we are beginning to address are: the elimination of the use of
Styrofoam in the cafeteria, improve our recycling efforts, offer opportunities
for students to hike locally after school, re-building the greenhouse, and to
educate the school community on environmental issues. Two students from the
group will be attending the Slow Living Summit in Brattleboro. The Summit is an
educational conference based on the idea of a "slow life". When we
live a "slow life" we recognize our role as members of our bioregions
and of our Earth, taking a nourishing rather than an extracting approach to
living. The summit is sponsored by Strolling of the Heifers. This is just
a sampling of what we are about. We encourage all L&G students and family
to get involved.
HOST
FAMILIES FOR SPANISH STUDENTS
Host Families wanted for Spanish students for
three weeks in July. Enrich
you household with an exceptional young person and open your doors to learn
about a new culture. Enjoy a cross-cultural experience right in your own
home! Students are ages 14 to 17 and are looking to improve their English
skills while learning about Vermont and US life and sharing their Spanish
culture. For more information, please contact Ann Newsmith or Norm Oaks,
community coordinators for the exchange program. They can be reached at
257-4710 or online at: www.exchangeVT@gmail.com
The Senior Class Trip will be Monday, June
2 at Camp Spofford, Chesterfield, NH, from 9:00 to 3:00. A fun and activity filled day is
planned, with a delicious BBQ lunch, and time to play and be together as a
class. All students will be transported by school bus and must have a
signed permission form, which they will get from senior class advisor Jeryl
Julian Cisse. Parents and students should regularly check the Senior Web
Page on the L&G homepage for updated information regarding graduation and
all end of school events.

FACS
New course offering for 2014-15: The Family and Consumer
Science Department is offering a new class next year. The class is called Risky
Business: Career Finance. It is a 1 credit elective credit class
offered to students in Grades 9-12. The class is
designed to provide students the opportunity to learn business finance,
technology, and entrepreneurialism while exploring interests and learning on
the job. Learning accounting, workplace relations, and business English,
students create a business and marketing plan, resume, and portfolio. A portion
of the course includes placement in a local community business. Students
demonstrate achievement through active participation, detailed journals, a term
paper, projects, presentations, and internship evaluations.
COLLEGE
COUNSELING
TRANSITION TO HIGH SCHOOL
For us in the Leland and Gray Counseling
Department, it’s not too soon to begin thinking about your child’s transition
from grade 8 to grade 9. Transitions, we know, can be difficult and rather
stressful events that result from not being clear about what to expect. The
next four years of your child’s education will be filled with so many rich and
meaningful experiences in and out of the classroom. The school counselors want
to ensure that these years include productive career and college planning
activities and events.
We invite you to join the school counselors on Wednesday, May 28, 2014 at 6pm in the L&G Library for our Grade 8 Transition to High School Night and learn more about the high school experience. We’ll explain course requirements, credits, and how to prepare for entering a college or career of one’s choosing. Our guest, Natalie Brennan from the Vermont Student Assistance Corporation (VSAC) will talk about financial planning, what colleges look for on a transcript and outline a college/ career plan of action for each year of high school. There will be time for questions and of course, refreshments! We look forward to seeing you!
