High School Future Day 10/16:

September 25, 2019

Dear Parents/Guardians,

On Wednesday, October 16, 2019, all high school students will be participating in an activity related to planning for their future. The activities are by grade and are intended to help inform each student about his/her abilities and desires when thinking about planning for life after high school. All students are to participate in their designated activity and, we hope, they approach the day with an open mind and positive energy!

The activities for the day are:

A field tip to 4 manufacturing sites in Brattleboro and Bellows Falls, focused on career awareness, exposure, and preparation.

The PSAT: The PSAT is a great primer for the SAT and/or ACT. Their PSAT score won’t count towards your college admissions applications. Use the PSAT as practice for the SAT and ACT and an important guidepost on your child’s college admissions journey. If s/he took the PSAT in 10th and 11th grade, having a second score is helpful to track his/her growth and to provide extra practice for the real exam. This will take place in the big gym from 7:45am-about 12pm and is a pencil and paper test.

ASVAB - The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery. Please Note: Students do NOT have to be interested in the armed services to take this exam and their scores will NOT be sent to the Military. The ASVAB measures aptitudes that are related to success in different jobs as well as training and education programs. Test results represent how well students have developed their academic and occupational skills in addition to their capacity to learn a particular type of work or their potential for general training. This will take place in Dutton Gym and is a computer-based test.

All 9th graders will attend the field trip.
All 10th graders will take the PSAT.
All 11th graders have a choice. Students can either take the PSAT or the ASVAB. Choices must be submitted to Sarah by Monday, October 7th.
All 12th graders will take the ASVAB. This will take place in the Dutton Gym.

After activities have concluded, students will have lunch and then return to classes. An adjusted schedule will be in place that allows students to attend all 4 classes for an abbreviated amount of time.

We are looking forward to this day and appreciate your support. Please let Sarah Grasso know if you have any questions sgrasso@lelandandgray.org

Sincerely,

Bob Thibault

Principal, Leland & Gray Union High School

Fairy House Festival:

Fairy House Festival, scheduled for September 28th and 29th.
Fairy House Festival is by far our biggest fundraiser and we couldn't pull it off without the help and generosity of volunteers. It’s because of the funds raised at the Festival that we are able to keep our museum doors open and our programming costs accessible.
Volunteering at Fairy House Festival is not only an opportunity to support The Nature Museum, but also to make new connections and have fun. Volunteer duties include facilitating crafts, being a trail docent, managing the bubble station, and working at the refreshments tent just to name a few.
Students can sign up to volunteer by clicking this link, or by visiting our web page and following the “Fairies”. There, volunteers will be able to choose their shift(s) and sign up to receive a free t-shirt.

NEYT Event:

30 Plays in 60 minutes?! You Bet!

New England Youth Theatre proudly presents “Too Much Light Makes The Baby Go Blind,” or TMLMTBGB (as it is affectionately known). Written by the Neo-Futurists, and directed by NEYT fan favorite Jane Baker. This show performs at 7pm on October 4, 5, 11, and 12, and at 2pm on October 5 and 12 at 100 Flat Street, in Brattleboro.
This large and vibrant cast of teens, ages 13-19, is an ensemble experiment, calling on the audience to participate in this interactive performance. “30 Plays in 60 Minutes,” is the theme of the evening, and each play is wildly different, touching on all tones and genres; they may be political, satirical, personal, tragic, comic, poetic, abstract, surreal or musical.
Tickets for these performances are $15 for adults, $13 for seniors, and $11 for children. Tickets may be purchased in advance at www.neyt.org, in person at the NEYT Box Office from noon to 5 on Wednesdays, or by phone at 802-246-6398
