Dear L&G Families:


As we approach the final weekend of the school year, I would like to take a moment to thank you all for your collective trust and support in me as your principal for the past seven years. When I came back to L&G as your principal, I was excited about the potential a small but dynamic school can have, and how it can impact the lives of not only the students, but the entire West River valley. We have a really special thing here, and I’m very excited to become the WCSU Superintendent next month, and incredibly hopeful for the future of L&G with Mr. Dana Aquadro and Ms. Jesse Riemenschneider taking over the leadership. You are all in very good hands! To you parents of seniors - congratulations. This ceremony tomorrow morning marks the end of their compulsory schooling, but it really marks the beginning of their lives. As guardians and family members, you deserve a hearty congratulations for guiding, prompting, and pushing them to reach this point. It’s been a team effort for sure. We all know how tough the last four years have been for them (and you!) with zoom schooling, masking and the challenges of depression and anxiety that have plagued our youth coming out of the pandemic. So, when their name is called Saturday morning and your heart is full of pride, take a moment to pat yourself on the back.

Summer Chromebook Information:

Dear Parents,


I hope this letter finds you and your families in good health and ready to enjoy the summer season. I am writing to inform you about an exciting opportunity for our students to enhance their learning experiences during the summer break. All Leland & Gray students will take their Chromebooks home for the summer. Leland & Gray students have received training on the setup and proper care of their Chromebook, Google accounts, and digital citizenship. By using the equipment provided by WCSU, they agree to all policies set forth within the document you and your family received at the start of the year.


Providing access to these devices during the break will offer several positive benefits for our students' continued learning and growth. With their Chromebooks, students can engage in continuous learning throughout the summer. They can explore educational websites, access online resources, and participate in virtual learning opportunities to reinforce and expand upon the knowledge they gained during the school year. The middle school team has put together a Google Classroom where they will be posting skill-building practices to help students maintain their skills through the summer. While Chromebooks are designed to be durable and withstand regular use, accidents can happen. Parents should discuss the importance of proper care and responsible use of the Chromebook with their students. It is essential to note that the repair and replacement of IT equipment may be the student's and family’s responsibility. The IT department will implement a shut-off time from 11 pm to 7 am when the machines will be rendered unusable. This measure aims to promote healthy screen time habits and ensure adequate rest for students during the night. Please email the IT department at cbsupport@windhamcentral.org for any repair issues that may arise.


We understand that some parents may prefer not to have their children participate in this program. If you do not want your child to take the Chromebook home for the summer, please contact cbsupport@windhamcentral.org. We will make the necessary arrangements accordingly.

June Lunch Menu:



Summer Food:

Starting this summer there is an all-new summer food program launching here in the West River Valley. Once a week throughout the summer months we will be distributing meal bags containing 5 days worth of breakfast and lunch. Bags will be filled with high quality items including local produce, cheese, dairy and other treats. Meal bags will resemble bags of groceries rather than composed meals. 

Any person under the age of 18 is eligible to receive a bag regardless of enrollment or home address. This means children/teens from Ohio, Japan or Antarctica can show up and receive a bag. Families will receive one bag per child, per week. Parents may pick up bags without children being present, however prior permission is needed to pick up for other families (send an email to Jacob Gallogly, Food Service Director, at jgallogly@windhamcentral.org to arrange this). Bags packed for dietary restrictions are available by emailing Jacob Gallogly ahead of time.

Please spread the word! This program is for everyone regardless of income. The more bags that we can distribute, the better it is for our School Nutrition Program.

Grace Cottage Hospital Fair Day:

Grace Cottage is looking for student volunteers to help at Grace Cottage Hospital Fair Day this summer!  Volunteers are needed the day of the event, Saturday, August 5th, helping with the various booths.  Volunteers are also needed for set up on Friday, August 4th.  Please call Eileen Fahey at (802) 365-4030 or see Terry in Room B8.

Wardsboro 4th of July:

Wardsboro 4th of July Street Fair is looking for student volunteers to help with this famous, fun event!  Volunteers are needed for various tasks/shifts from July 3-5. If anyone is interested please  reach out to wardsboroparade@gmail.com and we can let them know options of what we need help with and the times that are associated with those tasks. 

Jamaica Memorial Library:

Jamaica Memorial Library is exploring the possibility of creating a summer reading program for elementary students who may be at risk of losing literacy skills over the summer. 

We are looking for older students (middle and high school) who may act as "literacy partners" for our summer program. Volunteers would be trained in literacy coaching--playing games, practicing sight words, and reading with younger students. We would work out the scheduling and other logistics depending on the response we get, but it would be flexible. 
 
We are also looking for teen volunteers who might be interested in helping with our summer camp, or who might be interested in general volunteering at the library--special projects, library assistance, sorting and helping with our book sale and community book shelf.

Entrepreneurship: CREATIVITY & INNOVATION - Governor’s Institutes of VT (GIV) - This summer, June 25th – June 30th, secondary students have an opportunity to expand their entrepreneurial spirit and workforce skills during GIV’s Entrepreneurship: Creativity & Innovation one-week residential immersion at Vermont State University’s – Randolph, VT Tech Campus. Students will have the guidance of proven entrepreneurial experts, a chance to interact with VT Small Business Development Center
Business Advisors, community leaders, plus a network of peers to propel them forward in brainstorming, evaluating, and acting on their ideas, planting the seeds for their own network for future success - and having fun all the while! Summer Internship:

Honig Dairy Goat Farm in East Dover, Vermont is looking for an intern for summer 2023 who enjoys being with animals and desires to learn about farming and dairy production. The intern will learn about basic husbandry of dairy goats, including feeding, maintaining stalls and milking. In addition, the intern will learn about and participate in aspects of health care for the goats, such as hoof trimming and any routine medical treatments. Because the work will require carrying hay bales down from the hayloft, stacking hay from deliveries and bringing in bags of grain/shavings, interns must be able to lift 50 lbs.

Our farm is also a licensed micro-dairy that centers itself around ethical and humane practices. We produce cheese on the premises from the milk provided by our own herd, and the intern will have the opportunity to participate in dairy handling and cheese-making. S/he will learn how to milk goats, properly store milk using sanitary practices, as well as use and maintain milking equipment. Other optional topics that can be covered are breeding/genetic planning, mock birthing scenarios, and enrichment activities for the goats.

SUMMER OPPORTUNITY


National Summer Transportation Institute:

AOT is partnering with Vermont State University to run the National Summer Transportation Institute (NSTI Vermont) this summer. These FREE summer camps offer middle school and high school students a chance to learn about transportation careers from an early age.
Students explore careers and activities in Civil Engineering, Aviation, Environmental Engineering, Auto/Diesel Mechanics, Heavy Equipment, Construction, GIS technology, Rail, Public Transit, Traffic Safety, and much more! High school students also have an opportunity to explore the college admission process and preparation for entering the workplace.

Scholarships Available for Junior Golf Camps:

The Brattleboro Country Club Women’s Golf Association sponsors a scholarship program for golf camps using proceeds from redeemable bottles and cans collected at the Club and in our homes. In the first 2 years of our program, we have provided 3 scholarships on a first come, first serve basis. We hope to increase this amount as the program grows. Golf is a great way for kids to get outdoor exercise in a safe and fun environment. This summer BCC will offer 3 full and half-day Junior golf camps; June 26-30, July 17-21 & Aug. 7-11, 2023.
