Restorative Justice Training:
A two-day restorative justice training with Dan DeWalt will take place on Tuesday, December 2nd and Tuesday, December 9th from 2:45-4:15. The training is recommended for all Leland and Gray community members, staff, students, and parents. Mr. DeWalt has facilitated numerous restorative circles at Leland and Gray in the last five years and will travel to New York City this month to further his training by attending a course offered by the International Institute for Restorative Practices. This weekend ten students will be participating in the Winter Connecticut Valley Music Festival (known as "districts"). Music students from 16 different schools in southeastern Vermont will be represented. Sarah Anderson, Zoie Brooks, Veronica Stevens, Fairen Stark, Caroline Mehner and Gabrel Vanni-Phillips will be performing in the middle school chorus. Carl Judd-Wright will be in the high school concert band and Emma Urbaska, Susie Francy and Adam Culver will be in the high school jazz chorus. The Concert is in the Bellows Falls Union High School Auditorium on Saturday, November 22nd at 3PM.

Fragrance Awareness
“Being forced to breathe in others' fragrance choices is a lot like being forced to breathe in secondhand smoke," is what Pamela Dalton, PhD, MH, an olfactory researcher at the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia Dalton told WebMD. "It's a loss of control over your personal environment, and for some it can have serious personal health consequences." http://www.webmd.com/allergies/features/fragrance-allergies-a-sensory-assault?page=2
Pamela Dalton spent 20 years researching scent memory and what is referred to as “nose blindness.” She told New York Magazine that when you first smell an odor, your scent receptors send a signal to your brain’s limbic system, which determines how you will process and feel about that particular scent. But Dalton says the receptors in your nose essentially turn off after around two breaths, and the scent—no matter how strong initially—starts to fade.
There are students and staff members at L&G who get severe headaches from fragrances worn by others. No one at L&G purposely wishes to harm another, yet fragrances continue to plague those who are sensitive to them. Perhaps taking a break from all fragrances could prevent headaches in those who are sensitive to fragrances, and refraining at school could enhance the enjoyment of wearing the fragrance on the weekend for those who wish to wear them.
