RE: Leland and Gray Players to present The Wizard of Oz
TOWNSHEND The Leland and Gray Players open their 19th season with the musical, The Wizard of Oz, adapted for the stage by the Royal Shakespeare Company from the original MGM film. The original story is by L. Frank Baum and music is by Harold Arlen and Yip Harburg.
A perennial family favorite, The Wizard of Oz tells of a quest for a better life over the rainbow; it is a testimony to the value of perseverance and of thoughtfulness, courage, and compassion. Seeing it on a more complicated level, many scholars believe it is a story rife with political commentary on and satire about turn-of-the- last century’s socio-economic conditions. In any case, the production promises to entertain with all the favorite characters and musical numbers from the ever-loved film.
The cast includes Leland and Gray students Alexa Litchfield as Dorothy; Madison Cannella, Wicked Witch; Nathaniel van Osdol, Scarecrow; Tino Benson, Tinman; Jesse Cannella, Lion; Gabrel Vanni-Phillips, Wizard; Jasmine Domenick; Glinda; Lela Winot and Nic Tolbert, Toto; Fairen Stark and Adam Culver, Guards; Vinnie Ferrizzi and Nastia Stevens, Uncle Henry and Auntie Em; Sarah Anderson, Skye Richardson, Veronica Stevens, Zoie Brooks, Fairen Stark, Rebekah Winot Madison Chase, Girls’ chorus; Sam Thibault and Julia Barton, Nikko and Sidekick; Kenny Cashman as Winkie.
Rounding out the cast as Munchkins, Winkies, Monkeys, and others are elementary school Players from throughout the district and several home-schooled students including: Addy Redden, Adler Pickering, Ainsley Meyer, Andrew Tolbert, Anna van Osdol, Annika Crego, Aubrey Goodband, Avarie Fitzpatrick, Camden Robinson, Catherine Shine, Christian Cannella, Dea Burrow, Delano Schmidt, Elsa Skarsten, Evelyn Swim, Fiona Scott, Grace Wright, Hope Thibault, Isabel McCarthy, Isabella Lynch, Izzy Jarvis Stores, Jasmine Wilkins, Joshua Ferrizzi, Kate Petty, Lillie Beshay, Lily Litchfield, Madison Chase, Madison Coolbeth, Marina Dion, Marley Felker, Mary McDonald, Mickaley Cutts, Raena Sanderson, Ruth Wright, Savannah Fitzpatrick, Stephen Shine, Sylvia Stark, Theo Kelloway, Weston Cutts, and Willa Redden.
Jesse Cannella is scene and costume designer; Tino Benson is costume and graphic designer; Sage Hall and Grant Cullen run sound; Nastia Stevens, Kenny Cashman, Anna-Cate Harrison and Trey Crego run lights. Running crew captain is Olivia Reilly with Rachel Spence, Emily Thibault, Emily Stockwell, Haley Buffam, Sam Harrison, Natalie Cullen as crew.
Dale Stevens is tech director; Caroline Rex-Waller is costumier; Ron Kelley is music director; Ann Landenberger is director. Numerous parents have pitched in with ample time and talent.
