Meet Louie:

Last year, Phoebe Connolly, School Counselor informed the School Board of a proposal pilot program for Leland & Gray. The pilot program involves incorporating a comfort animal into the counseling program. There are a number of schools within Vermont that have utilized comfort animals within their school community. There is research which has been conducted which shows that comfort animals can increase student's positive attitudes towards school and learning as well as reduce student stress, anxiety and improve school attendance. Her presentation, which the Board was in support of, can be found here.

Phoebe has been working on training a dog she adopted this summer, Louie, a four-month old mixed breed puppy. He's an international fella and comes from Turks & Caicos in the Carribean. Phoebe got him to help her other dog, Gemma, a rescue dog from Puerto Rico, to assist with her nervousness around new people. Louie is a sweet, affectionate and mellow dog. Louie will be in Phoebe's office so that any students with allergies or a fear of dogs are aware of his location. We are looking forward to incorporating Louie into our school community. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Phoebe and/or Mr. Thibault.

Louie is the handsome guy on the left.

HEY Help:

HEY Help will not meet Tuesday, 10/22 through Thursday, 10/24 and Monday, 10/28 through Tuesday, 10/29. HEY Help will resume Wednesday, 10/30. The late bus will still run, however, the library will not be open for HEY Help during those days. If a student needs to stay after school, please contact the teacher in the needed subject area. Any questions, please see/call Mary Lindsley, 365-7355.

From the Nurse:

Our Dental Program is up and running! Please return dental permission forms if you would like your child to have a dental hygienist assessment and cleaning. This can be done in conjunction with existing care, or for those without a current dental home. Forms are available on the Health Series website linked from the school website, the SNAP portal, or your student can request one from the nurses office.

Additionally, PLEASE return free & reduced lunch applications. A copy can be picked up in the office or found on the Health Services website. It is vitally important for us to have as many filled out as possible to continue to receive the funding necessary to offer FREE LUNCH for all students. Thank you for your assistance in this matter.

These conferences will be scheduled for 10 minutes each unless there are particular concerns or accommodations that need to be discussed at more length. In that case, we will set aside 20 minutes. We will meet in rooms A-3 and A-11 on A-level that evening and encourage you to stop by the gymnasium to meet with their Exploratory teachers either before or after. **Please look for a mailing with more information and a sign up sheet.

High School Future Day 10/16:

On Wednesday, October 16, 2019, all high school students will be participating in an activity related to planning for their future. The activities are by grade and are intended to help inform each student about his/her abilities and desires when thinking about planning for life after high school. All students are to participate in their designated activity and, we hope, they approach the day with an open mind and positive energy!

The activities for the day are:

A field tip to 4 manufacturing sites in Brattleboro and Bellows Falls, focused on career awareness, exposure, and preparation.

The PSAT: The PSAT is a great primer for the SAT and/or ACT. Their PSAT score won’t count towards your college admissions applications. Use the PSAT as practice for the SAT and ACT and an important guidepost on your child’s college admissions journey. If s/he took the PSAT in 10th and 11th grade, having a second score is helpful to track his/her growth and to provide extra practice for the real exam. This will take place in the big gym from 7:45am-about 12pm and is a pencil and paper test.

ASVAB - The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery. Please Note: Students do NOT have to be interested in the armed services to take this exam and their scores will NOT be sent to the Military. The ASVAB measures aptitudes that are related to success in different jobs as well as training and education programs. Test results represent how well students have developed their academic and occupational skills in addition to their capacity to learn a particular type of work or their potential for general training. This will take place in Dutton Gym and is a computer-based test.

All 9th graders will attend the field trip.
All 10th graders will take the PSAT.
All 11th graders have a choice. Students can either take the PSAT or the ASVAB. Choices must be submitted to Sarah by Monday, October 7th.
All 12th graders will take the ASVAB. This will take place in the Dutton Gym.
