Friday Notes 6/11/21

SCHOOL INFO

June 11, 2021

As Vermont inches closer to the 80% vaccination rate set by Governor Scott as the marker for many restrictions being lifted, we are already starting to see things change around us.  At this point, the one remaining thing that could change, is graduation.  Right now, the plan is to have family pods with limited seating, but as we approach the 80% mark, it is entirely possible that our graduation will be “normal” with unlimited seating and no pods, distancing or masks.  This may be a last-minute decision!

If you didn’t receive my phone call yesterday afternoon, I want to let folks know that we did have a propane tank outside the school, leaking gas which quickly flowed into the open windows and caused us to evacuate the building around 1pm.  All students and staff were out back on the fields for the remainder of the day, while the Townshend Fire Department worked with the propane company to stop the leak and replace the tank.  Afterwards, they tested the air in the building and eventually (after 3pm) declared the building safe for reentry.  I appreciate the flexibility that everyone showed during this crisis situation, and frankly, for this entire school year.

Graduation

Our 2021 Commencement Ceremony will be held at 10am on Saturday, June 19th.  Because we’re limited to outdoor activities, if the weather is poor, our “rain date” is 10am on Sunday, June 20th!  Senior families will be receiving more detailed information shortly in a separate communication.  Please be aware that changes may occur, although they may not.  School guidance for all school events are considered separate from the Vermont Forward Plan.  Not all of the “public” guidance applies to school functions.

HS Credit Recovery from COVID

If your child is missing credits (Inc or IE) from last spring or this past fall semesters, you’ll be receiving communication from Samantha Harlow about how to make up those credits, including a short summer recovery camp immediately after school ends.  Please reach out to Ms. Harlow at sharlow@lelandandgray.org.

Very sincerely,

COMMUNITY SERVICE:

West Townshend Thrift Store- Community Service Opportunity:

Urgent need of volunteers for the West Townshend Thrift Store!

We are a non profit organization with a focus on clothing the community at extremely affordable prices and providing meals to those in need. Everything we sell is by suggested donation so we will never turn anyone away who needs something.
In search of folks who are willing to help organize and sort through clothes or to cover the register.
You can volunteer as much or as little as suits your need, every little bit would help me out tremendously.
This could also be a great opportunity for a highschool student who needs to fulfil their 40 hours of community service, while also gaining valuable retail experience.
If this sounds like something you, or anyone you know, might be interested in, please contact Westtownshendthriftstore@gmail.com

Tour de Grace- Community Service Opportunity:

Grace Cottage Hospital is looking for 4 or 5 student volunteers for our 15th Annual Tour de Grace on Saturday, June 26, from 8:00-noon.
