Dear L&G Families:
I wanted to thank all of you parents and guardians for your continued support in creating a safe and healthy learning environment for your children. The work that our staff does on a daily basis to balance the social/emotional needs of the students alongside the academic demands requires families to be on board. This is not a one-sided endeavor. So, as we roll into April vacation and the staff receive a well-deserved vacation, I want to thank you as well as them for the effort. It truly takes a community to raise a child.

Fearless Futures Summit Field Trip:
GRADES 10 and 12 only
On Tuesday, May 2nd, Leland & Gray will join other area schools at the Fearless Futures Summit at Twin Valley High School. The goal is to connect employers, colleges, and other organizations with Windham County’s young, up-and-coming talent.
Some of the limitless, often non-traditional pathways to postsecondary success that will be represented are: High-wage/high-growth employers
2- and 4-year colleges
Gap year
Certification and Credential of Value programs
Public service such as the military, law enforcement, firefighting and EMT careers
Volunteer service such as Job Corps, AmeriCorps, or Teach for America
Business planning and financing resources for young entrepreneurs

COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES
Grace Cottage Hospital Fair Day:
Grace Cottage is looking for student volunteers to help at Grace Cottage Hospital Fair Day this summer! Volunteers are needed the day of the event, Saturday, August 5th, helping with the various booths. Volunteers are also needed for set up on Friday, August 4th. Please call Eileen Fahey at (802) 365-4030 or see Terry in Room B8.
Pancake Breakfast and Earth Day:
Student volunteers are needed for the Pancake Breakfast and Earth Day games at the Townshend Church and Commons on April 29th hosted by West River Valley Thrives from 9am -1pm. Volunteers are needed for the following times/tasks:
- 8-10: cooking pancakes, coffee station set up, juice, clearing plates, washing dishes, cooking sausages, helping out as needed.
- 10-Noon: cooking pancakes, serving, clearing, washing dishes, cleanup, setting up outdoor games
- 11-1:30 : run games and activities
- 1-2: Clean Up
All volunteers get breakfast! If interested, please stop by the Thrives office on C-level or see Terry in B8.
Gerda's Equine Rescue:
Gerda's Equine Rescue is looking for volunteers for their Spring Clean-Up Volunteer Day on

Wardsboro 4th of July:
Wardsboro 4th of July Street Fair is looking for student volunteers to help with this famous, fun event! Volunteers are needed for various tasks/shifts from July 3-5. If anyone is interested please reach out to wardsboroparade@gmail.com
Townshend Elementary School:
Townshend Elementary School is looking for a volunteer/s to coordinate a boys running club afterschool for grades 2-5. This would probably be for one or two days a week after school. Days/times can be flexible. If you have any interest, please see Terry in Room B8.
Jamaica Memorial Library:
Jamaica Memorial Library is exploring the possibility of creating a summer reading program for elementary students who may be at risk of losing literacy skills over the summer.
We are looking for older students (middle and high school) who may act as "literacy partners" for our summer program. Volunteers would be trained in literacy coaching--playing games, practicing sight words, and reading with younger students. We would work out the scheduling and other logistics depending on the response we get, but it would be flexible.
We are also looking for teen volunteers who might be interested in helping with our summer camp, or who might be interested in general volunteering at the library--special projects, library assistance, sorting and helping with our book sale and community book shelf.

Opportunities for Students:
Announcing BUSINESS/ENTREPRENEURSHIP COMPETITIONS – open to all secondary students in any discipline - All VT secondary students are eligible to enter the 15th annual Business Plan/Business Model Canvas or Business Video Pitch contests now through May 19. Students have an opportunity to work as a team or individually to demonstrate creativity, innovation, leadership, problem solving, communication skills and more to take a business idea from inception to a business model plan or business video pitch. The experience of competing in these challenges can be awe-inspiring on a student’s resume, application for employment or post-secondary education. Entrepreneurship: CREATIVITY & INNOVATION - Governor’s Institutes of VT (GIV) - This summer, June 25th – June 30th, secondary students have an opportunity to expand their entrepreneurial spirit and workforce skills during GIV’s Entrepreneurship: Creativity & Innovation one-week residential immersion at Vermont State University’s – Randolph, VT Tech Campus. Students will have the guidance of proven entrepreneurial experts, a chance to interact with VT Small Business Development Center
Business Advisors, community leaders, plus a network of peers to propel them forward in brainstorming, evaluating, and acting on their ideas, planting the seeds for their own network for future success - and having fun all the while! Seeking a Sitter:
We are looking for a sitter a few days a week for our two awesome kiddos, age 7 and 5. We live in Windham on 3 acres of garden so there is lots to do outside! Both parents work from home. Ideally we are looking for someone who drives so they can get the girls out and about a bit, but are flexible with this. Must like pets (dog, cat and hamster). National Summer Transportation Institute:
AOT is partnering with Vermont State University to run the National Summer Transportation Institute (NSTI Vermont) this summer. These FREE summer camps offer middle school and high school students a chance to learn about transportation careers from an early age.
Students explore careers and activities in Civil Engineering, Aviation, Environmental Engineering, Auto/Diesel Mechanics, Heavy Equipment, Construction, GIS technology, Rail, Public Transit, Traffic Safety, and much more! High school students also have an opportunity to explore the college admission process and preparation for entering the workplace.
