May 5, 2023 Dear L&G Families: This week a vast majority of our students participated in the new (and improved???) state testing protocol - Cognia. This included all 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 11th graders. While there were a few hiccups, overall the sessions went well. Thank you for your support in having your child take this seriously, as the data gleaned from the assessments will become public in the fall. In the coming weeks, students will be asked to complete a school climate survey about their experiences here at L&G. If you do not want your child to participate in this, please see the attached letter for information on how to opt out. Bob Thibault Principal

Prom:
Parents/Guardians: If your student is planning on attending prom this year, please confirm they have the minimum required hours of community service to attend. Please reach out to Terry if you have any questions! #802-221-2117 or tdavison-berger@windhamcentral.org
The L&G Junior Senior Prom, themed Enchanted Forest, will be held on Saturday, May 20th at the Newfane Union Hall.
Photos on the Commons will occur prior to the event - the L&G community is invited.
The doors of Union Hall will open at 6pm with the Grand March beginning at 6:30pm.
At 7pm, non-prom attendants will leave and those attending prom will have dinner together followed by a DJ from 7:30-10:30.
Tickets are $25 each and will be sold starting on Friday, May 5th during HS lunch.
Here is the criteria for attending prom and purchasing tickets:
- only L&G juniors and seniors can purchase tickets
- students that are suspended from school in the week prior to prom will need administrator approval to attend
- L&G juniors and seniors need to have completed the required number of community service hours to attend prom - students and parents have been notified in a number of different ways for those still in need of hours
- ticket sales will be during HS lunch only - selected juniors will be selling tickets. Juniors - please step up to volunteer to sell tickets (and prepare and decorate) for prom - check your email and email Phoebe
- freshman and sophomores may attend if asked by a junior or senior - the junior/senior must purchase the tickets and list the name of the 9th/10th/non-L&G student attending
- any non-L&G student attending the prom must be pre-approved prior to Friday, May 19th at noon and be under the age of 21. The L&G student must arrange to have their guest complete the Dance Approval Form

Robert L. Crowell Scholarship:
The Moore Free Library is offering a total of $12,000 in scholarships, generously funded by the family of the late Robert L. Crowell. These awards are open to all residents of Newfane, S. Newfane and Brookline who are graduating high school seniors at any high school or who are GED
recipients. The scholarship committee will consider academics, personal growth, and community service.

P-EBT:
Vermont will be issuing a final round of Pandemic EBT (P-EBT) benefits for Summer 2023. All students at our schools qualify for a Summer P-EBT benefit of $120 per student. This is due to the way that we are offering free school meals to all students this year.
The benefit card will be sent to the head of household and the mailing address that we have on file for your student. If you have moved or need to update the head of household, please let us know by Wednesday, May 10th. To make changes, please contact Donna Albin dalbin@windhamcentral.org WCSU P-EBT official.
These benefits will be sent out by mid-August. If your student missed school for a COVID-related reason between February 2023 and May 11, 2023, you will also receive benefits for those days at the same time.

Grace Cottage Hospital Fair Day:
Grace Cottage is looking for student volunteers to help at Grace Cottage Hospital Fair Day this summer! Volunteers are needed the day of the event, Saturday, August 5th, helping with the various booths. Volunteers are also needed for set up on Friday, August 4th. Wardsboro 4th of July:
Wardsboro 4th of July Street Fair is looking for student volunteers to help with this famous, fun event! Volunteers are needed for various tasks/shifts from July 3-5. If anyone is interested please reach out to wardsboroparade@gmail.com
Townshend Elementary School:
Townshend Elementary School is looking for a volunteer/s to coordinate a boys running club afterschool for grades 2-5. This would probably be for one or two days a week after school. Days/times can be flexible. If you have any interest, please see Terry in Room B8.
Jamaica Memorial Library:
Jamaica Memorial Library is exploring the possibility of creating a summer reading program for elementary students who may be at risk of losing literacy skills over the summer.
We are looking for older students (middle and high school) who may act as "literacy partners" for our summer program. Volunteers would be trained in literacy coaching--playing games, practicing sight words, and reading with younger students. We would work out the scheduling and other logistics depending on the response we get, but it would be flexible.
We are also looking for teen volunteers who might be interested in helping with our summer camp, or who might be interested in general volunteering at the library--special projects, library assistance, sorting and helping with our book sale and community book shelf.

Announcing BUSINESS/ENTREPRENEURSHIP COMPETITIONS – open to all secondary students in any discipline - All VT secondary students are eligible to enter the 15th annual Business Plan/Business Model Canvas or Business Video Pitch contests now through May 19. Students have an opportunity to work as a team or individually to demonstrate creativity, innovation, leadership, problem solving, communication skills and more to take a business idea from inception to a business model plan or business video pitch. PAID INTERNSHIP:
The UVM Medical Center Phlebotomy Technician Apprenticeship Program:
Our program allows apprentices to be paid employees with benefits from the first day of training, starting at $16.63/hour. The apprentices spend the first five (5) weeks in an intensive classroom session preparing for the Phlebotomy Certification exam, which is included in our program. After those five weeks, they begin the on-the-job training full-time. Our only requirement for candidates is that they have a high school diploma or equivalent and be over the age of 18. National Summer Transportation Institute:
AOT is partnering with Vermont State University to run the National Summer Transportation Institute (NSTI Vermont) this summer. These FREE summer camps offer middle school and high school students a chance to learn about transportation careers from an early age.
Students explore careers and activities in Civil Engineering, Aviation, Environmental Engineering, Auto/Diesel Mechanics, Heavy Equipment, Construction, GIS technology, Rail, Public Transit, Traffic Safety, and much more! High school students also have an opportunity to explore the college admission process and preparation for entering the workplace.
