CULINARY SCIENCE
Part of the Culinary Science final exam was
tailored around the Food Network TV show called "Chopped." In this
show chefs are given a basket of "mystery ingredients" that they must
use to create a new food. This is the first time I have tried this with my
students and I was VERY impressed, to say the least!
The appetizer basket contained: dried polenta (corn
meal), canned pineapple rings, tomatillos, maple syrup, and marshmallow fluff.
The salad dish basket contained: cottage cheese,
jicama, chorizo sausage, kidney beans and kiwi.
The dessert basket contained: bacon, parsnips,
cheese crackers, slivered almonds, and candied ginger.
The students researched recipes, asked questions about ingredient substitutions and one "Game Day" they blew it out of the water!!. The results were amazing!!
The appetizer (made by Alex Adams) consisted of
polenta fries with a tomatillo and pineapple (and other ingredients) salsa that
was topped with a dollop of fluff and drizzled with maple syrup.
The salad (made by Kaleigh Maskell) was a brown
rice, kidney bean, seared chorizo, and mashed jicama salad with puréed cottage
cheese and ranch seasoning dressing.
The dessert (made by Cortland Manton) was a cheese
cracker and minced ginger candy crusted cheesecake, topped with a parsnip
puree' caramel sauce and sprinkled with slivered almonds and crispy bacon bits.
We also enjoyed vegetable spaghetti sauce over
whole wheat pasta (made by Natalie Cullen and Emily Sorrell) and corn flake
chicken tenders (made by Ben Davis)
I am so proud of the risks these
kids took in trying something new, in traveling on uncharted waters, and in
feeling confident in trying something new with food.
Please help me in congratulating them on their
successes!!

HUNGRY
HEARTS FILM
The
Hungry Heart: A Film about
Prescription Drug Abuse in Vermont comes to Leland and Gray. The Hungry
Heart provides an intimate look at the often hidden world of
prescription drug addiction. We meet St. Albans pediatrician Fred Holmes, who
works with patients struggling with this disease.
In
addition to students and parents/guardians involved in co-curricular
activities, this free event is open to all students, staff, and community
members. Leland and Gray will feature the movie in the Dutton Gym on Wednesday, January 29th at
6:30pm (snow-date: February 5th). Before the film, a reception
for all moviegoers will be provided beginning at 5:45pm, sponsored by the
West River Valley Thrives Coalition.
Afterwards,
filmmaker Bess O’Brien, Dr. Holmes, his patients, and family members will
present and answer questions from the audience. Earlier that day, they will
present at a school assembly and meet with doctors at Grace Cottage Hospital to
discuss the problem of prescription drug abuse in our area. The film shines a
light on the healing power of conversation and the need for connection that
many young addicts yearn for, but do not have in their lives. Throughout the
movie, we see the many faces and diverse populations of addiction, and their
continued search for a life of recovery. Please attend this unique opportunity
for our community to learn together.

A NOTE FROM THE SAP!
As we get further
into winter we will continue to get more snow and ice. With the first storm of
the season many people were caught off guard by the amount of ice that it
delivered. Here are a few tips to keep
you safe while driving this winter.
1)
Decrease your speed and leave yourself plenty of
room to stop. You should allow at least three times more space than usual
between you and the car in front of you.
2)
Brake gently to avoid skidding. If your wheels
start to lock up, ease off the brake.
3)
Turn on your lights to increase your visibility to
other motorists.
4)
Keep your lights and windshield clean.
5)
Use low gears to keep traction, especially on
hills.
6)
Don't use cruise control or overdrive on icy roads.
7)
Be especially careful on bridges, overpasses and
infrequently traveled roads, which will freeze first. Even at temperatures
above freezing, if the conditions are wet, you might encounter ice in shady
areas or on exposed roadways like bridges.
8)
Don't pass snow plows and sanding trucks. The
drivers have limited visibility, and you're likely to find the road in front of
them worse than the road behind.
9)
Don't assume your vehicle can handle all
conditions. Even four-wheel and front-wheel drive vehicles can encounter
trouble on winter roads.
Remember if it is too dangerous outside do not go
out. Stay inside with a good book, board game or movie. For more information
visit http://exchange.aaa.com/safety/roadway-safety/winter-driving-tips/.
SOFTBALL FUNDRAISER
Share your REBELS spirit by purchasing a Leland & Gray Rebels Window Decal for your cars. They
are not a sticker, but a decal, so if you ever need to remove it, it can be
done easily. They are selling for just $10. Proceeds benefit the L
& G Softball Program. They will be available for sale at all home
basketball games as well as through Tammy Claussen.
HEY!
You!!
The Late Bus will be running on Thursday next week. For information on the route and the dates it will be available
for the 2013-2014 school year, please visit www.lelandandgray.org.
Next week is a short week and marks the beginning
of the new semester. We do not have school on Monday or Tuesday, and Wednesday
is a make-up day for exams so there are no HEY! Programs until Thursday. Look
for HEY! Help Thurs. and Fri. mornings (7:15-7:45) and Thurs. afternoon (2:45-
4:15). Thursday look for LGTV, D&D, and CLEA. Friday, the GSA will meet
with Ms. DeBisschop in B-11. Enjoy the long weekend!
Remember to check the HEY! website for updates on
programs, and you can always ask Megan Altshuler for information or email afterschool@lelandandgray.org.
