HUNGRY
HEARTS FILM
The
Hungry Heart: A Film about
Prescription Drug Abuse in Vermont comes to Leland and Gray. The Hungry
Heart provides an intimate look at the often hidden world of
prescription drug addiction. We meet St. Albans pediatrician Fred Holmes, who
works with patients struggling with this disease.
In
addition to students and parents/guardians involved in co-curricular
activities, this free event is open to all students, staff, and community
members. Leland and Gray will feature the movie in the Dutton Gym on Wednesday, January 29th at
6:30pm (snow-date: February 5th). Before the film, a reception
for all moviegoers will be provided beginning at 5:45pm, sponsored by the
West River Valley Thrives Coalition.
Afterwards,
filmmaker Bess O’Brien, Dr. Holmes, his patients, and family members will
present and answer questions from the audience. Earlier that day, they will
present at a school assembly and meet with doctors at Grace Cottage Hospital to
discuss the problem of prescription drug abuse in our area. The film shines a light
on the healing power of conversation and the need for connection that many
young addicts yearn for, but do not have in their lives. Throughout the movie,
we see the many faces and diverse populations of addiction, and their continued
search for a life of recovery. Please attend this unique opportunity for our
community to learn together.
A NOTE FROM THE MUSIC DEPARTMENT!
Please congratulate the following students who
auditioned for and were accepted to the District Music Festival:

School Band:

School Jazz Band:

on Saturday, February 8, at the Mid-Vermont Christian School.
Also, please congratulate 7th
grader Brandon Dorman for building the strongest bridge in Mr. Walters'
Technology Education Class. Brandon designed and tested his bridge using
a CAD program, drew a blueprint of his design and then built it using basswood
strips and glue. Brandon's bridge supported 17 kilograms or 37.47
pounds. (A single strip of basswood cannot support one pound!)
Isabelle Rogenski's bridge came in second by supporting 4 kilograms or 8.81
pounds.
