HUNGRY
HEARTS FILM
The
Hungry Heart: A Film about
Prescription Drug Abuse in Vermont comes to Leland and Gray. The Hungry
Heart provides an intimate look at the often hidden world of prescription
drug addiction. We meet St. Albans pediatrician Fred Holmes, who works with
patients struggling with this disease.
In
addition to students and parents/guardians involved in co-curricular
activities, this free event is open to all students, staff, and community
members. Leland and Gray will feature the movie in the Dutton Gym on Wednesday, January 29th at
6:30pm (snow-date: February 5th). Before the film, a reception
for all moviegoers will be provided beginning at 5:45pm, sponsored by the
West River Valley Thrives Coalition.
Afterwards,
filmmaker Bess O’Brien, Dr. Holmes, his patients, and family members will
present and answer questions from the audience. Earlier that day, they will
present at a school assembly and meet with doctors at Grace Cottage Hospital to
discuss the problem of prescription drug abuse in our area. The film shines a
light on the healing power of conversation and the need for connection that
many young addicts yearn for, but do not have in their lives. Throughout the
movie, we see the many faces and diverse populations of addiction, and their
continued search for a life of recovery. Please attend this unique opportunity
for our community to learn together.

A NOTE FROM THE SAP!
As we get further
into winter we will continue to get more snow and ice. With the first storm of
the season many people were caught off guard by the amount of ice that it
delivered. Here are a few tips to keep
you safe while driving this winter.
1)
Decrease your speed and leave yourself plenty of
room to stop. You should allow at least three times more space than usual
between you and the car in front of you.
2)
Brake gently to avoid skidding. If your wheels
start to lock up, ease off the brake.
3)
Turn on your lights to increase your visibility to
other motorists.
4)
Keep your lights and windshield clean.
5)
Use low gears to keep traction, especially on
hills.
6)
Don't use cruise control or overdrive on icy roads.
7)
Be especially careful on bridges, overpasses and
infrequently traveled roads, which will freeze first. Even at temperatures
above freezing, if the conditions are wet, you might encounter ice in shady
areas or on exposed roadways like bridges.
8)
Don't pass snow plows and sanding trucks. The
drivers have limited visibility, and you're likely to find the road in front of
them worse than the road behind.
9)
Don't assume your vehicle can handle all
conditions. Even four-wheel and front-wheel drive vehicles can encounter
trouble on winter roads.
Remember if it is too dangerous outside do not go
out. Stay inside with a good book, board game or movie. For more information visit
http://exchange.aaa.com/safety/roadway-safety/winter-driving-tips/.
