Attention all Parents: Please e-mail pbrissette@lelandandgray.org and make your reservation for Parent Conferences which are on October 15th! Middle School parents: you have the choice of team conferences between noon and 3:00 or individual conferences from 3:30-7:00. HS conferences are 3:30-7:30 only.
From the Music Department:

It’s better to miss one game than the whole season! Our Leland and Gray kids are active and love their sports! Now that the fall sports program is underway it’s important to remember that a concussion can happen at any time, and can happen doing anything! You don’t have to be involved in a sport to sustain a concussion. A concussion is a brain injury. They are caused by a bump or a blow to the head. You can’t see a concussion. Signs and symptoms of concussion can show up right after an injury or hours after.
WHAT ARE SOME SYMPTOMS OR SIGN OF A CONCUSSION?
- Appearing dazed or stunned
- Confusion/ Forgetful
- Clumsy movement
- Slurred speech/ Slowed response to questions
- Loses consciousness (even briefly)
- No history of events or recall prior to injury
SYMPTOMS REPORTED BY STUDENTS:
- Headache, pressure in the head
- Nausea or vomiting
- Balance disturbance, Dizziness, Blurred Vision
- Sensitivity to light or to noise
- Confusion or a feeling of not feeling right
HOW YOU CAN HELP AND WHAT YOU SHOULD DO IF YOU SUSPECT YOUR CHILD HAS A CONCUSSION:
- Make sure your child wears all the protective equipment for their activity such as helmets, mouth guards, eye protection etc.
- Learn the signs and symptoms of a concussion
- Seek medical attention if your child exhibits even mild symptoms of concussion
- Keep your child out of play. Concussions take time to heal. Your child should not return to an activity until he or she has been cleared by a medical provider.
- Make sure you notify your child’s coach, school nurse, and other school personnel of your child’s recent concussion in any sport.

From Drivers Ed:
Distracted driving has become the number one cause of motor vehicle crashes (yes, out numbering driving while under the influence.) Two September events, geared for parents and students, focus on the dangers of distracted driving.
Leland and Gray will host Turn off Texting on Monday, Sept 21st and Thursday, Sept 24th. On both days, from 9:30 – 2:30, participants will get to experience first hand the dangers of texting and driving. Developed by the Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles and presented by the Youth Safety Council of Vermont, Turn Off Texting is a demonstration that raises awareness about the dangers of distracted driving by putting students and adults behind the wheel of a golf cart to navigate a course of cones while texting. Please try and find some time during the day to take the golf cart for a spin.
Also on Monday, Sept 21 at 6 pm in the main gymnasium, Leland and Gray is hosting a presentation by professional race car driver Andy Pilgram, from Boca Raton, FL. Andy Pilgram has been a professional race car driver for over 26 years; Andy has won 5 championships and 62 races so far in his professional racing career. In 2008, Andy created The Andy Pilgram Foundation. The Foundation’s mission is to educate new drivers, parents and all adults about the deadly problems associated with distracted driving. Andy's presentation is specifically geared for students and their parents in grades 7-12. All adults attending the presentation will receive a complimentary copy of the DVD, The Parent Driving Zone. Andy describes the DVD as “the essential driving information all parents need to know.”
Students and parents, please make every effort to attend both events.

L.E.A.F. (Leland & Gray Environmental Action Force) Starting!
High School students will have lunch meetings every Friday in the co-op room.
Middle & High School Students can join us after school on Wednesdays starting September 16th.

LEAF is offered through the H.E.Y. program.
Some of the things we do:
Farming and gardening - Help us plan and execute the new L&G School Community Garden
Hike and snowshoe
Learn wilderness skills
Create and teach upcycled crafts
Educate the school and community on environmental issues
Attend youth conferences with other students who love and want to protect our environment
Watch interesting science movies and eat popcorn!
Let's make a plan for the year together!

Late Bus:
The late bus will begin running on Monday, September 14th.
The late bus runs Monday - Thursday. The late bus does not run on half days or on Wednesdays during Winter Sports.
After School Programs:
After School programs will begin running on Monday, September 14th. Please see or e-mail Dale Stevens with any questions.
Opportunities:
Students: interested in being a Peer Tutor? a counselor at the Elementary Schools during their after school programs? interested in running your OWN after school program? These are all paid opportunities offered through the After School Program. See Dale if interested.
Community Members/Teachers/Staff: The After School programs are looking for another staff member to assist students with homework during afternoon HEY! Help. Please see or e-mail Dale if interested.
