Friday Notes 5/21/21

SCHOOL INFO:

May 21, 2021

This past week has been the most challenging ever in my 15 years as a building level administrator.  I want to say thank you to everyone for the outpouring of support for the Landers family, our baseball and softball teams on Tuesday, and the entire school community.  Grieving is a complicated process, and everyone travels through that journey in different ways.  Please be sure to check in with your children not just this week, or after the Celebration of Life on Sunday, but throughout the next few weeks and months.  Regardless of how old they are or how independent they say they want to be, they still need the adults in their lives to be there, listen and give them plenty of hugs.  As I alluded to earlier, there is a Celebration of Life for Dylan Landers this Sunday at 1pm at Indian Acres Farm, 476 Grassy Brook Road in Brookline.  Rebel green, gear or other camouflage attire is welcome!

Vaccine Clinic Information

Rescue, Inc. will be providing a vaccination clinic here at L&G for students ages 12 and up.  This will occur on Tuesday, May 25th from 12pm - 3:30pm.  Appointments must be made in advance via the VDH website.  The second dose is scheduled for June 15th from 12pm -3:30pm as well.  Please note that this is NOT a school day, and families will need to transport their children here for that second dose!  The clinic will be set up in the front driveway on both days near the Dutton Gym.  Included in this edition of the Friday Notes are two important vaccination-related documents: 1) A Vermont Department of Health information sheet on the vaccine for kids, and 2) information about a zoom meeting for parents to learn more and ask questions with the VDH.   Any other questions, please contact Jorda Daigneault at jdaigneault@lelandandgray.org.

Spirit Week

This coming week was supposed to be Spirit Week.  Due to the tragedy last week, we are modifying our plan.  We will be holding a school-wide lunch/picnic and have some fun outside on Friday.  Remote Academy students may still join us, beginning at 11am.

End Of Year Events

We are still busy planning our end of year events as the state finally released their guidance during vacation week.  Here are a few dates we know for now, but more details will be coming soon.

5/24 NHS Induction 5pm (outside)

5/31 Memorial Day (no school)

6/3 Pops Concert 6pm (outside)

6/11 Last day of classes

6/12 Prom

6/14 Make up day (buses still run, students encouraged to come in for help/support in completing missing summative assessments!)

6/19 Graduation 10am

6/20 Graduation (Rain date) 10am

6/21-7/2 Summer Recovery Camp (details coming soon!)

Prom

L&G prom will be (Mask)Quarade and will be held on June 12th (Saturday) from 6-11pm.  We will be in a tent behind the school, and a meal will be provided.  There will be a Grand March planned, and details will be shared with prom goers!

Graduation

Our 2021 Commencement Ceremony will be held at 10am on Saturday, June 19th.  Because we’re limited to outdoor activities, if the weather is poor, our “rain date” is 10am on Sunday, June 20th!  Senior families will be receiving more detailed information shortly in a separate communication.  Please be aware that changes may occur, although they may not.  School guidance for all school events are considered separate from the Vermont Forward Plan.  Not all of the “public” guidance applies to school functions.

COMMUNITY SERVICE:

West Townshend Thrift Store- Community Service Opportunity:

Urgent need of volunteers for the West Townshend Thrift Store!

We are a non profit organization with a focus on clothing the community at extremely affordable prices and providing meals to those in need. Everything we sell is by suggested donation so we will never turn anyone away who needs something.
In search of folks who are willing to help organize and sort through clothes or to cover the register.
You can volunteer as much or as little as suits your need, every little bit would help me out tremendously.
This could also be a great opportunity for a highschool student who needs to fulfil their 40 hours of community service, while also gaining valuable retail experience.
If this sounds like something you, or anyone you know, might be interested in, please contact Westtownshendthriftstore@gmail.com

D4 VT State Track & Field- Community Service Opportunity:

LGUHS is hosting the D4 VT State Championship Track & Field meet this year on June 4, and volunteers are needed.  Please see Mr. Pecsok if interested.

Tour de Grace- Community Service Opportunity:

Grace Cottage Hospital is looking for 4 or 5 student volunteers for our 15th Annual Tour de Grace on Saturday, June 26, from 8:00-noon.
