Middle School Field Trip to Wellwood Orchards!

SCHOOL INFO

October 7, 2022

Dear L&G Families: As I hope you know by now, tonight is the annual Rocktoberfest Bonfire and Dance event here at L&G. It runs from 7pm - 10pm and costs the students $5 to enter. Only L&G students are allowed at this event. If you are dropping off a child, please do so no earlier than 6:45pm and pick up promptly at 10pm! This coming week is an unusually busy one - with a holiday on Monday, PSATs for 10th graders on Wednesday, and parent conferences on Thursday and Friday (both early release days at 11:30am). We haven’t had a “normal” parent conference since the fall of 2019, so many of you haven’t had the opportunity to see it. On Thursday the 13th, teachers will be set up in the main gym and activity room to meet with parents between 2pm-7pm. No appointments are required for this session. Parents simply arrive, receive a copy of their child’s schedule (with teacher names) and a “map” of the layout so that you can find the correct teachers. On Friday afternoon, from 12-3pm, teachers will conduct Zoom parent conferences for those who would prefer that method; teachers should have already sent out invitations to you to reserve a slot on that day. But again, if you are choosing live conferences on Thursday, no appointments are necessary. While the Thursday sessions are going on, there will also be some other folks with presentations. Upward Bound will have a table in the C-level lobby, as will West River Valley Thrives. VSAC will be running a Paying for College Night session at 5pm and parents may stop in anytime between 5-6:30pm to get “drop-in” support from VSAC! Additionally, Terry Davison Berger and Sarah Grasso will be available to talk with families about the wide variety of options students have for their high school education as well as opportunities after graduation. Information on the following will be available: * High school credits - how do they work and what does my child need? * Independent Studies * Co-op * Dual Enrollment * Early College * Planning for college * Senior Survival * Gap Year programs * Trade schools / certificate programs * Workforce prep * Military options * College application process Have a wonderful weekend, Bob Thibault Principal Coming Events:

About the workshop:

“Your Own Wild Voice with Moira Smiley

The human voice has astonishing range and color, and - as with our lungs & brains - we may not use it to its full glory! This fast-paced, fun workshop playfully explodes your assumptions about your own voice. We will explore fresh, physical ways into singing. Eastern European and Appalachian songs will root you, while call & response, vocal improvising and movement will keep you discovering ever more inventive parts of you. Moira playfully draws out techniques, timbres and styles you always knew were in you as a singer or writer, but maybe hadn't felt you could bring out! Singers of all experience levels are welcome.”

About the artist:

“Moira is a performer, composer and teacher who grew up in Vermont, attended Village Harmony camps and later taught Village Harmony sessions.  Moira’s academic specialty is Early Music, and she has developed parallel experience with various folk traditions – especially early American, Irish, and Balkan vocal styles. By exploring the particularities of traditions, styles, and periods, she’s found something uniquely her own.  She’s performed with the likes of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Tune-Yards, Tim O’Brien, Eric Whitacre, Los Angeles Master Chorale, New World Symphony, Solas, and The Lyric String Quartet.”
